HBP has been published now, and it has had quite the effect. The book did something no other book in the series has done: it sunk some ships and let others sail ( Read more... )

Thanks, CB--this was a good letter, and addresses my utter confusion at this reaction. JKR was never particularly subtle about the fact that she was headed toward R/Hr, either in the canon text or in her interviews. The "clues" were things that H/Hers thought from the subtext, and enough people had pointed out the flaws in the reasoning that this, while it may have come as a disappointment, should not have come as a surprise. JKR played fair with the text and her comments. The worst thing she did was kind of roll her eyes at the ship wars, because she assumed everyone involved was having fun with them ( ... )

Oh, Bravo, CornedBee, for being so wonderfully articulate, so even-tempered, and so right in speaking for so many of us. I have always ignored the (intense) shipping wars, because really I can't understand the absolute vitriol that people build up, and I don't understand why readers would become bitterly divided over books they all profess to enjoy. Particulary when, as you eloquently note, shipping is not what the series is about. I had, therefore had avoided reading the rant. But your magnificent rebuttal is a different story: you clearly make your case, point by point, in a non-hysterical manner that should make the entire community proud. Thank you, CornedBee, thank you!

Bee, once again, you prove your case with logic and simplicity. Thank you for writing this. I think many people, on both sides of the debate, take all the shipping we want to see in the books far too seriously and lose sight of the true meaning of the series. Yes, love will play a large part in the climax of book seven, but shippers focus so much on the romance that we tend to lose sight of the rest of the brilliant and multi-faceted jewel before us.
