I've been plagiarised. My videos, to be more exact.

As a person has gone through this exact same thing multiple times, I can tell you the recommended course of action.

1) Confront the offender by e-mail. Explain nicely that stealing clips from another person's video is faux pas. Ask that they take down their work and apologize.

2) If the offender acts belligerently or just plain out lies about stealing the clips in the first place, ask your friends here to e-mail the offender and harass him/her.

This has worked for a lot of people in the past. I've dealt with people who were young/stupid and just didn't know that what they were doing was bad, but it looks like what you have is not the case. This person probably knows, and judging by the fact that they are selling videos online, have to be old enough to carry a credit card. They were probably depending on the possibility that it would never get back to you.

Let me know if you want me to harass the offender. I've had experience dealing with this both ways. (As a friend harassing, and defending my own work.)

I'd add that if a personal request from you doesn't do the trick, posting the notice of plagiarism, with names named, on lists and boards where the vid might be recced is another way to spread the grief for the offender. I do think a campaign to do that is warranted, once you marshall your evidence and document whatever similar theft has occurred in the other vids. There are plenty of people here willing to help, Jo.

I already heard from some board managers that said she linked to her vids on their boards. And I heard from some posters that saw her posting elsewhere. I am most definitely contacting all those boards and requesting action to be taken - and I am definitely NOT going to stay quiet myself.

Yep, that is your work alright. What a bitch.

I've gone through this before with textual plagiarism on-line (someone was stealing my blog entries, for crap's sake, and posting them as their own. Pathetic.) and an email and apology followed - Although, they never stopped doing it completely. It sucks. This seems like a much bigger deal. You have my sympathy and support. I'm so sorry your beautiful work was been treated this way.

I know! The only reason I found out about it is because I was the person who actually helped her set up a blog in the first place. They saw mine, complimented it and my writing, and asked for help in getting their own, which I was happy to provide.

Only to find when I checked back weeks later that she was ripping me off. I was shocked, horrified, and confused. Why on earth would someone want to plagiarize something like that? It boggles the mind.

Some people just suck, and that's all there is to it.

Jo, I'd really, really suggest joining some vidder communities -- they are different from fan communities specific to a fandom, and do a better job of patrolling for vid edit theft. The biggest list is at yahoo groups -- groups.yahoo.com/vidder and there is a vidder community livejournal, as well. I don't play on the LJ community, but once you post on vidder, people will usually jump on the bandwagon. We believe in public humiliation of thieves! The best way to help with this is get it out and public. Name names, ask friends to pounce on these people. There are a lot of folks out there willing to stick up for those who've been stolen from!

Oh, my. Jo, I feel so terrible! I was the one who had the video linked on my LJ and I was the one who called it a "great Sarkney video" and now I take it back!! I mean, gah! I only watched it twice, but now that I watch it again, totally a rip of "Stay." And it did kinda occur to me that the SD-6 table scene looked awfully familiar. I'm gonna delete that journal entry right now! btw, I found the link in her signature line over at the sd-1 boards.

I feel horrible :( but in a way, I hope I helped you by bringing this to yours and everyone else's attention so that you knew your videos and efforts were being abused.

I hope this doesn't stop you from making more videos.
