I think I've always been afraid of doing a poll because I feel like noone will vote. I think this is a fairly poll-worthy question though. Or at least its something I think about alot.
It's kind of both/it varies... Like, I can love a song for the lyrics alone (e.g. David's Last Summer), but I can love it for the tune alone, too (like all of We Are Scientists' songs, lolz), so I think it compeltely depends. It's usually a combination of both, though.
Haha, ack...I forgot to vote for my own poll! Anyway, I'm pretty much the same way. Although lyrics really are a determining factor to me at times---the Manics wouldn't mean nearly as much to me if not for the lyrics, and I always feel bad thinking that way because JDB is my guitar hero! But sometimes, I just like a song because the music is just cool. I think I've finally decided that I love Pulp because of the lyrics, but the music gives those incredible lyrics an extra kick.
No, I agree, re: the Manics! With Generation Terrorists, a lot of it would probably be too 'cock rock' (IT'S TRUE!!!) if it wasn't for the lyrics. And I also agree with regards to the Pulp thing, that's how I feel about The Smiths, too. OH, but that's not quite true... I'd say it's 60% lyrics, 40% music for The Smiths.
1. Vocals, which I'm freakishly anal about. I can't stand listening to a band if their vocals are blah or annoy me in any way. If their songs are good, I'll listen to good covers instead. Sad.
2. Music & Lyrics--it's a combination of both like I voted in your poll. Music plays a bigger part, the lyrics, as long as they're interesting and not too repetitive is fine. A lot of bands, they only have like 2 verses and a 4-word chorus they repeat 20 times in a song, that's just..no.
3. I tend to prefer acoustic-sounding instrumentation. Some synthesizers sound really fake & cheesy, I don't like that.
1)G-A-H!! I forgot to make vocals an option!!! Thank you, I shall learn from this mistake!
2)Sometimes music plays a really major part for me, but if the lyrics are just stupid, I can't like a song. There are always exceptions to the rule, though.
3)My philosophy professor is the same way---he knows nothing about current music (by current, I mean 1980's and beyond). One of my friends loaned him some Beck cds, and he did not enjoy them because he thought the sound was too synthetic. He enjoyed the lyrics, though.
2) I don't like pop lyrics, but other than that I don't have strict rules. I can like songs that have gibberish lyrics if they are humorous and/or sound right with the music.
3) I like Beck, though yeah I think a lot of his recorded stuff is overproduced. I like his old folky stuff, and I love his live shows. :)
Interesting poll... I almost went for it varies or different from band to band (I think that answer might actually be the most accurate, as I know there's a couple guilty pleasures out there I definitely DON'T listen to for the lyrics, lol...) but I think the lyrics always win for me. Maybe because I'm originally from the musical theatre/theatre background and words were the first love, I don't know... but it's the lyrics I notice first and the lyrics that make it or break it. I'll listen to a band/artist I don't usually like if they have meaningful or relatable lyrics... I don't do that with people I don't like because of music itself. (Fun question, I'd love to see more polls! ;-) )
