The next 10 years....

Jun 10, 2008 20:27

I attended my wife's 10 year high school reunion this past weekend and it got me thinking about how little I've accomplished thus far. Yeah, I met the usual benchmarks of moderate success - degree, marriage, house, career - but I'm still the same, lackluster individual. There's almost nothing that my 28-year-old self can do that my 18-year-old ( Read more... )

I don't want to shit all over your list, but you might want to be more adventurous. Most of the items there can be summed up as either get in shape, go snowboarding, or watch movies. I've done the movie portion already, and I've got to say, aim higher. Travel, learn a new language, and write a book are probably your best long term goals. Most of the things you have listed are things you can purchase. If you really think that meeting your former self in a darkened alley one night, owning a water scooter is going to give you the edge you need to survive, then I say go for it; but I wouldn't say it's likely to make you a better human being.

Mine would probably look something like:
1.Finish writing play
2.Get in shape
3.Get job
4.Travel
5.Learn French fluently
6.Fuck a lot of women
7.Make a movie or write a novel
8.Study history, philosophy, and science
9.Get a PH.D. in English

The list could have been constructed better, but I think I covered all the important stuff. In fact, I think it looks a lot like your list. I want to do more of the things that I already enjoy but rarely do (snowboarding, movies and travel), learn to do some things I've always envied in other people (guitar, Spanish and woodworking), and do a bunch of important things that I'm always putting off (staying healthy and keeping up with chores). I know that a lot of the things are simple purchases, but they are ones that I have denied myself for years, in spite of my being more than able to afford them. I kept it simple on purpose; I'm not about to set myself up to fail.

What sorts of "adventurous" items should I have included?

1.Climb the pyramids
2.Fly in a hot air balloon
3.Running of the bulls
4.Safari
5.White water rafting

I'd also read the complete Shakespeare and The Divine Comedy if you haven't already. Everybody ought to do that before they die.

Well, I am going to Spain so maybe I'll run with the bulls. It can't be worse than the Idaho "wild cow milking" contest (I'll post a pic of this later). And I'll probably go white water rafting this summmer becaise Amanda's stepdad is a river guide. I very nearly went on a balloon ride in Australia, but didn't schedule it in time. I don't think you can actually climb the pyramids, at least not legally. I didn't put "go to Africa" on my list, but I should have. Maybe when I'm in Spain I'll hop across the Straight of Gibraltar and visit Morocco.

You're gonna be able to do 10 times as many pushups by the end of August?

You have a degree, are getting married, and are actively seeking a job. So your list, such as it is, is almost 3/4 complete.

self improvement is masturbation. so considering I masturbate 8 hours a day, I figure I could spare 6 or 7 minutes a day to fake a few things similar to those on your list.

but you're still a fag.
