No decisions have been made at this time. This is an open comment post about the possibility of moving the community (and closing our LJ doors) or mirroring the community (and leaving posting access at both LJ and DW ( Read more... )

I've been missing the old LJ. This was one of my favorite communities. I haven't migrated to DW yet - but I might do it.

Ah - I'm replying to my own thread...

I wish some of the old members would come back - lets see - I remember - skeletonscloset, necrakitty, cathy Hay, bad button, bishonen rancher - I know there are a bunch of others - these are just the names I remember off the top of my head.

I think a lot of activity moved to Facebook around 2012-13 - not because of any great Drama, that's just where people were/are spending more of their internet time. So it goes. I really want to preserve Corsetmakers as a source of information, even if we aren't terribly active here anymore.

Yeah - I remember seeing that happen.

In any case, I'm feeling more & more ready to make the switch. (Your post further down with the explanation about DW &c helped)

I know nothing about Dreamwidth. Many of the people I used to follow no longer post here, which is a shame. I seldom post as I am now retired and have little or no costume stuff to post about. But I still like reading what others are doing.

DW started 8 years ago as a fork of LiveJournal's code, so it's very similar in structure/posting style/community organization/etc. It was created by fans, for fans, after LJ made it clear that fans were only dubiously welcome here. They are a private company and do not sell advertising - all funds are from paid user accounts of various types. Dreamwidth has made many improvements on the LJ code, so it's very pleasant from a user perspective. You can also set up automatic cross-posting, if so desired.

If you want to know more about the reasons for the split, you can find some background here, at fanloreThe reason behind considering this change is that, as of a few days ago, the LJ servers are located in Russia, which means everything posted to LJ is no longer covered by US laws (including data protection and freedom of speech). Many people are uncomfortable with the change and are leaving LJ ( ... )

We could definitely shut off posting access (or restrict it to just the mods). I believe we could also change the comment settings... let me go check that...

Definitely agree that we don't want to ruin anyone's bookmarks.

Thank you!

... yes! We can shut off comments for the whole journal.

I think this option makes a lot of sense, especially for the only occasional checkers of LJ

I read both LJ and DW so it doesn't particularly matter to me. My own active community I periodically import to DW so it's mirrored. The only potential downside of running on both services is that DW posts and comments won't be on the LJ version, so when maintaining a presence on both it's a good idea to have a sticky post on LJ that the more complete version is on DW.

You can keep re-importing? That's good to know. I've had my journals crossposting since the beginning, so I've never had to try that.
