2011 Fic Rec List
Well, I decided to make a fic rec post to round out the new year with. So Happy New Year everyone! Here's some great fic I enjoyed this past year.
First I wanna say Dean/Cas is the first and only slash pairing I ship. I think there is potential for love but I also accept it as friendship or platonic love.
Supernatural may get on my nerves and we may be on love/hate terms right now but I'm thankful they introduced me to these characters. Especially Cas. He will forever go down as one of my favorite fictional characters of all time.

There are so many good fics out there, I can't rec them all or this post would be 20 pages long and we'd be here all day. So here are just some of my faves from 2011.

Kite Songs- Dean is hailed as the Vonnegut of his generation; Cas is the highly-respected English professor who can't stand Dean's work and blogs about it for the world to see. Hijinks ensue.
I loved how they were both portrayed in this fic. Lovely. I loved seeing Dean as an academic as well. Also for once, Cas is the one being hesitant and conflicted. Dean was very passionate here. It was nice to see him not being a 'bartender' or 'mechanic' for once. lol He's smart too, sometimes people forget that.

Family Business- Dean is a modern Mafia Prince, Cas is the weird guy he falls for while working at a Soup Kitchen for community service.
I really liked this. I like how Dean found himself falling so hard for Cas and how Cas was BAMF in his own rights.
Notes: Angst, violence, some heavy trauma/drama. (hey it's about gangsters, what do you expect?). Kind of pre-slash but there are definite moments of romance/UST.

Boys Helping Boys- Dean is straight (so he thinks) until he meets Cas who works on a "Queer Eye For the Straight Guy" type show Dean gets roped into participating in.
Really great fic. Sweet and romantic. Loved the chemistry bewteen Dean and Cas.

Dsytopia Is For Lovers- Ben Braeden has just moved to California to live with his scientist dad and his schoolteacher uncle after the death of his mother. Things begin to look up for him and his family when he meets the famous sci-fi author, Castiel Novak.
Yes, Ben is in this story but don't be put off by that. This is a TOTAL AU, so it doesn't deal with Ben & Lisa like the show did and Ben is really cute & younger in this story. It's has no relation to anything that happened in canon or on the show, peroid. It mostly focuses on Dean coming to terms with how he feels about Cas.

This is a Gen fic. No sexy times. But seriously, it's great. Beautiful story. Castiel's compassion and love for Dean is beautiful. Read it.

As Dean takes refuge in his own mind to escape the torture, angels gather, ordered to undertake an unusual mission: rescue The Righteous Man from Hell. Castiel knows an invasion of Hell will be difficult, but he has no idea how much this mission will demand of him, how wrong the best-laid plans can go - and how much everything is about to change irrevocably. Meanwhile, Dean's defenses and his hope start to fail. He thinks no one is ever coming to save him. He's wrong.
Again, no sexy times but this is a fab story by an amazing author, don't miss out!

Damned- Different take on how Castiel and Dean met. When Dean falls in a pit and breaks what feels like every bone in his body, he figures this is going to be the hunt that gets him. But the cave he finds contains a thing trapped in a circle of fire-a thing that calls himself Castiel and claims to be an angel. Castiel says he requires his freedom and that he’ll heal Dean in exchange. Dean’s far from convinced about any of it, but his encounter with Castiel is something he’s not going to be able to shake.
GEN. No slash. But seriously, read it, BEAUTIFUL story. Lovely. One of my faves from this year. Just love the way Dean & Castiel's friendship played out and how they are drawn to each other.

Little Things- An in-depth take on Dean and Castiel friendship through S5.
One of my nostalgic favorites. This was one of the first fics I ever read after I joined the SPN fandom! Lovely story about how Dean and Castiel's friendship develops.

A Thousand Small Cruelties- The Holidays are over but this is sweet fic about the Winchesters spending Christmas together with Cas and Bobby and Dean dealing with how he feels about Cas. Set around S5.
Another old favorite, one of the first fics I read after I became a SPN fan. Very sweet fic, don't let the first couple of chapters throw you off, it's happy story.

Outrun My Gun- "The two of you are so stubborn you've made Heaven blink." Finally convinced that Sam and Dean will never say yes and accept their destinies, Heaven and Hell come up with a new plan, one that will redraw the Apocalypse and make everything run much more smoothly. All they need is Dean Winchester's soul.
This was def. one of my fave stories written this year. Some of y'all on twitter might remember me talking about this one. BEAUTIFUL story that shows no matter the circumstances and situation; Dean and Cas will always be drawn together. Just lovely.
Notes: Temporary character death (nothing too bad, just a plot device), semi detailed sex scenes, romance, mild angst, some drama, but a happy ending.

Catch the Wind, See Us Spin- Think along the lines of the episode "What is and What Should Never Be". Things aren't what they seem.
Great story, I don't usually like sad stuff but this is just BEAUTIFUL. Lovely and tragic. There have been several takes on the boys dealing with Djinn since that episode aired, but this is one of the best I've seen.
Notes: Dark, post apocalypse, Major angst, hallucinations/psychological trauma, semi detailed sex scenes, major sads. Have tissues.

The Girlfriend Experience- While it's not like Dean hasn't had a couple of truly regrettable hit-and-runs in his sexual history, this is probably the saddest fucking thing that has ever happened to him.
Great story, interesting characterization of Dean. I've seen a lot of people rec this one but if you missed it, check it out now!

Last One Out Hits The Lights- Zombie Apocalyspe fic.
Great fic about Cas and Dean being there for each other and falling in love, even while zombies run amok!
Notes: Gore (duh, zombies) but not really in terms of people getting their brains eaten or anything lol (don't be turned off if you don't like zombies, I don't either, but this focuses on Dean/Cas more than anything else) Some horror/action. Romance, happy ending.

Ghost Dance- Post apocalypse fic of Cas taking care of/falling in love with Dean after he suffers the consequences of the dealing with Sam being gone and Michael messing him up.
Angst filled but really wonderful story about Cas being there for Dean no matter what.

Three's a Crowd- There's a ghost following Dean around and pining after him but he's too busy falling in love with Cas to notice.
Sweet, Romantic and also surprisingly poignant. Don't let the plot line throw you, it's a great story.

**SPECIAL MENTION**
I didn't add any WIP or incomplete fics but I'm making an exception here. Redemption Road is a great ongoing fic effort that everyone should check out! It's an Alternate Season 7. Great especially if you are displeased about what happened to Cas and aren't feeling this season. Even if you do like S7, read this! A lot of great authors have worked really hard on this and it is amazing so far!

OK yes, there is some Jensen/Misha on this list. If RPS skeeves you out, just skip this part. I didn't use to like RPS much myself but I just think Misha and Jensen are both good looking guys and my Dean/Cas brain just likes to see them together. They are so different in real life, it's interesting to see how that plays out in fics.
Also, no. I do NOT ship them seriously. I think they both have lovely wives and seem very happy with them. I totally support their friendship as it is, as well as their marriages. This is purely for FUN. I don't take it seriously in the least, OK?

Orizuru- No matter how insignificant the question, Jensen has always craved answers. The origami birds scattered in his path are no exception - each accompanying message more obscure and more pointed than the last. As he slowly becomes the proud owner of a growing paper menagerie, Jensen has to decide whether to follow the clues or follow his heart.
This is a really good fic. I loved the characterization of Misha & Jensen. Jared and Misha kinda irked me at times with their actions but that was the point lol Main focus is on Misha and Jensen kinda discovering themselves and what they want from each other.

Worse Than Being Blind- Basically Misha is filming Stonehenge Apocalypse and sends Jensen a drunk text one night. Jensen freaks out and everyone seems to know what's going on but Misha, as he can't remember what happened that night. Misha is oblivious, Jensen is conflicted and hi-jinks ensue.
I like how Jensen was characterized here & I liked the way his and Misha's relationship progressed.

Reflections of Heaven & Home- Brought back to life and tossed into a world not his own, Gabriel finds himself unwittingly in the company of three humans...three humans who are both painfully familiar to him and vastly different from the people he left behind. In Jensen and Misha, he sees the same hidden longing he'd long since grown to recognize in Dean and Castiel, and with nothing else to occupy his attention, he sets out to do something about it the way he never could in his own world. Meanwhile, in Jared, he finds a partner-in-crime, a friend...and maybe something else he isn't entirely ready for.
I love crossover fics! This is sweet and romantic. There are some cute funny moments here and there but the way Jensen/Misha & Gabriel/Jared progress as friends into something more is so wonderful. Also, seeing Gabriel's insight on being stuck on earth was really interesting.

Showtime- Showtime has bought Supernatural and wants to push the Dean/Castiel relationship to gain viewers.
This story is hot and has some funny moments as well. There was another REALLY good one called like "HBO" or something but I think the author deleted their LJ. I know some people saved it to their computer but I don't have it :(

I like this one because it starts as just a simple romance with Jensen and Misha trying to figure each other out but the end was just so sweet and perfect. Loved it :D

Ad-Libbed- This follows Season 6 and goes through each episode interpreting different Dean/Cas moments(up to like Ep 11). Basically the tension that is between Dean and Castiel is because Misha & Jensen have so much tension between them. Jensen is frustrated because he can't figure out how he feels about Misha and drama ensues.
I LOVED the way this incorporated canon moments. I love fics, AU or otherwise that take stuff that happen in canon and put a different spin on it.
Notes: Mostly serious, drama-nothing too heavy though. Romance/sex and different interpretations of canon moments. Sweet ending.

This was def. one of my fave stories written this year. Some of y'all on twitter might remember me talking about this one. BEAUTIFUL story that shows no matter the circumstances and situation; Dean and Cas will always be drawn together. Just lovely.

Great story, I don't usually like sad stuff but this is just BEAUTIFUL. Lovely and tragic. There have been several takes on the boys dealing with Djinn since that episode aired, but this is one of the best I've seen.

The Girlfriend Experience- While it's not like Dean hasn't had a couple of truly regrettable hit-and-runs in his sexual history, this is probably the saddest fucking thing that has ever happened to him.

Great fic about Cas and Dean being there for each other and falling in love, even while zombies run amok!
Notes: Gore (duh, zombies) but not really in terms of people getting their brains eaten or anything lol (don't be turned off if you don't like zombies, I don't either, but this focuses on Dean/Cas more than anything else) Some horror/action. Romance, happy ending.

Three's a Crowd- There's a ghost following Dean around and pining after him but he's too busy falling in love with Cas to notice.

OK yes, there is some Jensen/Misha on this list. If RPS skeeves you out, just skip this part. I didn't use to like RPS much myself but I just think Misha and Jensen are both good looking guys and my Dean/Cas brain just likes to see them together. They are so different in real life, it's interesting to see how that plays out in fics.

As he slowly becomes the proud owner of a growing paper menagerie, Jensen has to decide whether to follow the clues or follow his heart.
This is a really good fic. I loved the characterization of Misha & Jensen. Jared and Misha kinda irked me at times with their actions but that was the point lol Main focus is on Misha and Jensen kinda discovering themselves and what they want from each other.

Worse Than Being Blind- Basically Misha is filming Stonehenge Apocalypse and sends Jensen a drunk text one night. Jensen freaks out and everyone seems to know what's going on but Misha, as he can't remember what happened that night. Misha is oblivious, Jensen is conflicted and hi-jinks ensue.
I like how Jensen was characterized here & I liked the way his and Misha's relationship progressed.

Reflections of Heaven & Home- Brought back to life and tossed into a world not his own, Gabriel finds himself unwittingly in the company of three humans...three humans who are both painfully familiar to him and vastly different from the people he left behind. In Jensen and Misha, he sees the same hidden longing he'd long since grown to recognize in Dean and Castiel, and with nothing else to occupy his attention, he sets out to do something about it the way he never could in his own world. Meanwhile, in Jared, he finds a partner-in-crime, a friend...and maybe something else he isn't entirely ready for.
I love crossover fics! This is sweet and romantic. There are some cute funny moments here and there but the way Jensen/Misha & Gabriel/Jared progress as friends into something more is so wonderful. Also, seeing Gabriel's insight on being stuck on earth was really interesting.

Showtime- Showtime has bought Supernatural and wants to push the Dean/Castiel relationship to gain viewers.
This story is hot and has some funny moments as well. There was another REALLY good one called like "HBO" or something but I think the author deleted their LJ. I know some people saved it to their computer but I don't have it :(

Ad-Libbed- This follows Season 6 and goes through each episode interpreting different Dean/Cas moments(up to like Ep 11). Basically the tension that is between Dean and Castiel is because Misha & Jensen have so much tension between them. Jensen is frustrated because he can't figure out how he feels about Misha and drama ensues.
I LOVED the way this incorporated canon moments. I love fics, AU or otherwise that take stuff that happen in canon and put a different spin on it.
Notes: Mostly serious, drama-nothing too heavy though. Romance/sex and different interpretations of canon moments. Sweet ending.
