GAME ENTRY 1 // "CALM BEFORE THE STORM" // OCT 22 - 28, 2007

The more things change, the more they stay the same, goes the old saying. In Cougar Ridge, that can't be more true. It's been nearly two years since the disastrous incidents that left the town a bullet riddled mess, but life does move on. However, it moves on in ways that people rarely expect. Many of those who were at the center of the strangeness ( Read more... )

It looks like snow. Early, but it does. That's okay. I never mind snow. It's good money, so I look over the plow blade and give it a few squirts of oil. I can make an easy couple of hundred dollars just by being ready when it snows ( ... )

I wake up on the sofa again today. My head aches and my mouth tastes like something died in it. The clock on the mantle reads 2:45. It's already past noon.

I wander into the bathroom and relieve myself before looking in the mirror. Awful. I look awful. My hair's a mess and my eyes are bloodshot. You're getting old and ugly. It was true. Hints of wrinkles had formed at the edge of my eyes. I was going to look like some horrible old shrew by the time I was forty, with bags under my eyes and a face like an unfolded road map.

I smiled. Okay...but maybe not quite yet. I was still pretty cute for a lush. Ha, ha, ha.

So what are we going to do today Terry? I think they're playing that new Scorsese movie at the local cinema. Wouldn't that just be sooooo fun? Watching a movie in the dark all by yourself. Tempting but I think I'll pass ( ... )

First hour Chemistry is Mr. Gorton. Everyone says he's the worst teacher around and laugh behind his back because of the way he dresses. He looks like the doctor on Back to the Future and wears these geeky cardigans all the time. They say he's still single at his age, but I wonder how they really know. Anyhow, I don't think he's so bad. I mean the tests are sick hard but he's usually fair ( ... )

I felt bad for knocking his books out of his arms. Really, I did. And it was really an accident. I mean it. But everyone just kinda...congratulated me for it, so instead of sticking around, I bolted.

My third hour class was study hall, so I had waaaay to much time to think. I tried my best to get what homework done that I could, but I was mostly thinking about the stuff I had to do after school, like Ms. Lavie's leaves, and a couple of other yards in town.

I closed my textbooks in frustration, knowing there was no way I could concentrate on them. That's just how it usually went. I would regret it later, trying to cram all my work in the next morning as early as possible, but concentrating was never my strongest suit.

Maybe things will get better after school today. I mean, besides this stupid Hallowe'en festival coming up, nothing EVER happens around here...

The Four Maples has sixteen rooms, six apiece on the east and west sides of a rectangle courtyard / parking lot and four across the south side. I live in a small house up on the hill to the north of the lot, looking down on the motel from the front windows and across a couple of wooded fields to where the Forest Road crosses 23 about a quarter mile away. Nine of the sixteen rooms were occupied last night, five by peepers - tourists driving thru on a tour of the mountains, watching the trees turn. They've missed the best of the Fall - these past couple of weeks I've been full most nights - but this part of Colorado is about the prettiest you can find outside of the east coast, and Cougar Ridge is right at the heart of it. Even this late in October the views are magnificent, so the peepers will be drifting through at least til the festival ( ... )
