I checked into the Four Maples last night, Sunday. It was a much longer drive from Missouri than I expected, and the Rockies are nothing like the Cumberlands! It's a lot colder up here than it had been down in the plains, and it gets dark faster, too. I'm real glad I decided to buy this sheepskin jacket back in Kansas.

The man at the motel office was real nice, if a bit nervous. Then, I was getting my bags out of Earl's 1972 Monte Carlo (if he didn't want me t'take it, he shouldn'a put it in my name, right?) when this fine lookin' man walked past. He tipped an imaginary hat to me and said, "Howdy, ma'am, that's a nice ride you got there." I give 'im a little curtsy and said, "Thankee kindly, sir." His smile got bigger an' he said, "Ma'am, I ain't heard a proper southern voice in too long. It's like a drink of sweet tea on a hot July afternoon." His name's Kevin Brunner. The restaurant was surprisingly good. Who knew foreigners could cook that well? When I was serving as a WAC teletype operator in France, where I met my Lawrence, the food was horrible!

Something else happened at the restaurant, and I'm not sure what. Even though I'm certain she's a heathen of some sort, I felt a sort of kinship with Mrs. Chen - some kind of cyclic connection. It's like she helped lift me out of the blue funk I've been in lately.
