today i had to give an oral presentation type thing in my environmental sociology class...something that should be quite simple, straightforward, something i should be capable of. speaking publicly for 4 minutes...i blab on and on most of the time, so piece of cake, right? but no. i am completely incapable of doing any such thing. the speech that ( Read more... )

Well if you want to talk about the childhood aspects, if anyone you spent a lot of time with growing up had any kind of anxieties or simply allowed themselves to be consumed by problems, work, etc. that kind of mental thinking and the coping mechanisms they employed can very easily be subconsciously learned by you.

It can also come from a sense of feeling neglected during your childhood, thus making you feel incapable of opening in any reasonable way or opening yourself to any vulnerability. When you're placed into a situation you can't run away from wherein you HAVE to open yourself to judgment like public speaking, you panic.

It can also come from self-esteem issues and is usually paired with something else and it's not always entirely a learned thing; chemical imbalance can play a major role, too.

Very, very common and very, very treatable. If I wasn't the world's biggest hypocrite, I'd do something about my own social anxiety.
