Shiny new thing

My reaction to the overabundance of overtime and fatigue was, apparently, to spend way too much money. I bought a KindleSeems to be a device that inspires mixed reactions. A lot of the negative ones seem to be based on people preferring the aesthetics of physical books, or the misperception that it has an LCD screen and accompanying glare/eye ( Read more... )

I'd be interested in hearing your reactions in a month. Several other friends have gotten them and I've been looking.
Today a coworker and I were talking about media, specifically about how he and my gf both own like 400 gazillion LP's. I own a hundred or so CD's but everything I care about is on two hard drives and backup tapes. Then we got to books. I still really love books... but with Wikipedia, 1/3 of my books are much harder to justify. It's only going to get more difficult, and Kindle is another nail in the coffin.

I'll be sharing my reactions on an ongoing basis... I really do hope I like it. I think it has the potential to be a great gizmo. We'll see if it's the right gizmo for me.

remember that anything which is available in pdf (though i haven't heard if they've been able to fix the conversion issue which makes some pdf formatting strange) or html can also be sent to the Kindle, so at least some du Maurier should be available.

i'm interested in the Kindle, myself, though i think i'll wait until the second generation at least.

Yep, I'm going to be investigating other sources of ebooks for that very reason. And maybe audio-books for the walk to work - I've never really tried them, but might be a nice change from music.

My initial reaction was to wait, but I got the impression that there won't be a second generation anytime soon? Of course, "soon" is relative...

Whenever we finally get together to exchange culture, I would like to gawk at your Kindle. I shall make note not to do so in my Utilikilt. ;-)

Noooooo Utilikilts! They are an abomination! My haggis won't have them in the house.

But gadget-gawking would be all right. One reason I got the Kindle is because of my fondness of gadgets. And I imagine I'll be showing the damn thing off to anyone who will hold still and listen/humor me. If I like it, that is. Hopefully I will.

I am curious how you like it. I love books and a new method of having reading material without carrying tons of books sounds intriguing.

I haven't forgotten we need friend time. I am still trying to get back into my routine. And with Father's Day this weekend requiring a drive to Tacoma, I am looking into the next week for friend time...

No worries - I just got my overtime bumped up and am working 60 hour weeks for the foreseeable future. :( Guh, so tired.

But when we do meet up, you can definitely check out the new gadget and see if you like it!

I still can't figure out how you can walk and read at the same time. I can barely read and stay awake at the same time :)

Seriously, I looked at the Kindle videos when it came out, and it looks pretty great. The price was the main catch for me, and I'm not much of a gadget person. I loved the video of dropping it though. I'm terrible on electronics (travel everywhere with them).

no lcd?

Me, read and walk at the same time? You kidding? I just listen to my iPod when I walk to work! I ride the bus part of the way home usually, so I read then. :o)

The price was pretty horrifying, but once I decide I want something, I get weird and obsessive until I just buy the damn thing. And hey, with this crazy overtime not stopping anytime soon, I deserve it!

No LCD. Electronic paper. Not backlit. I'm interested to see it in action.
