Seconding Tamora Pierce! Her work is full of awesome, and is well inter spaced with funny (or at least amusing). I'm a "start from the beginning" kind of gal myself, so for the Tortall series, that's Alanna, and for the Circle of Magic series, that's Circle of Magic: Sandry's Book. There's a good number to work through for either world, as well, so you should be reasonably well set for a while :3b
American Gods and Stardust by Neil Gaiman, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke (it's huuuuuuuuuuuuuge but I'm reading it atm and it's v. good!), Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series (first three books are so are great, after that it tapers off a bit), umm oh and the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman.
Also seconding the suggestions for Dragonriders of Pern and the Dark Tower!
Watership Down is an epic tale of bunnies and survival. It's good, but you were probably made to read it at some point in school.
Artemis Fowl is about a bitchy genius teenage boy and is wonderful.
Seconding Christopher Moore. Kurt Vonnegut is also very good. Slaughterhouse 5 is my favourite. C:
Uuuhhh The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is really good, as are the Sherlock Holmes, but idk if you're not interested in pre-twentieth century. They are very short and fun though.
Seconding American Gods! I've heard Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell is really good too, but I haven't gotten very far in that at all.
The Wraeththu books are pretty good too~ Though I'd recommend buying the omnibus as opposed to buying the books separately for the sake of cheapness. 1984 Is great too! And I also really liked The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, but it's considered a childrens book so that probably wouldn't last very long.
