Veronica Mars finale reaction (spoilers, of course)

..Okay, I tried, people. I wanted to like the finale, really I did. But I'm afraid I'll always be a hater.

Okay, so it wasn't Gia, as Kim and I suggested in our theory post. That's not surprising. But Beaver? Really? I'd heard people were suspecting him, as both a molested boy and the killer, and it's not completely and totally out of left field (like Aaron Echolls was, *cough*), but.. sigh. It could have been handled so much better. This finale was basically just last year's hated finale all over again. marleymulti and I made this little list of the similarities in plot and structure:

-Veronica comes up with an elaborate theory based on a tiny scrap of evidence (Beaver was on the team! He must have been one of the three boys Woody molested!), and is absolutely positive she's right.

-Veronica gets trapped somewhere alone with the killer, who suddenly starts ranting and behaving like a crazy person.

-Veronica explains to the killer exactly how he executed his plan, and is right on every single point.

-Veronica is shoved around, and cries and generally behaves like a scared little girl.

-Veronica is saved by someone close to her.

-Veronica thinks her dad is dead; once again, he makes it through just fine.

Also, why did Veronica feel the need to freak out and warn Mac? Her actions could have actually put Mac in more danger than she would have been in had Veronica quietly called the cops or something. V should have known that a text message could be easily intercepted by Beaver. And why would Beaver kill Mac, anyway? He had no reason to do so and hadn't ever shown any signs of wanting to harm her. If he hadn't intercepted the text, he probably wouldn't even have stolen her clothes and left her alone in the bathroom OR gone up to the roof to kill Veronica OR blown up Woody's plane.

And... okay, wait. Veronica manages to figure out Beaver's entire scheme in five seconds flat, but then she falls for "meet me on the roof"? Seriously? Why wouldn't Veronica think, "Hey, Mac is a smart girl; why would she ask me to meet her on a dark lonely roof when it would be just as easy to meet in the LOBBY which is SAFE and FULL OF PEOPLE?" And even if Veronica did assume Mac was stupid enough to suggest a rooftop meeting, couldn't she text back "no, lobby's safer" or something? Why the hell does Veronica always turn into an idiot during finales?

As for motive, I can buy that Beaver raped Veronica. With all his sex-related issues, it makes sense that he could only sleep with an unconscious girl. And I can even sort of buy the idea that he'd snap and think killing the guys who were going to expose the abuse was the only way to stop them. (Someone named alixnoorchis wrote an interesting post about how Beaver is only meek and put-upon in his own flashbacks (i.e., through his own eyes) -- he's very different when we see him in other people's flashbacks, such as in "A Trip to the Dentist," or when we see him setting Dick up with a drag queen or freaking out on Mac.) But I can't believe he was crazy enough to take out a bus full of innocent people, and I don't believe he could orchestrate everything so perfectly. Wouldn't it have been easier for him to just take that gun and shoot the two guys who were going to expose the abuse? I guess that wouldn't have made much of a season though, huh?

Now, I suspect that fandom, as a whole, is gonna love this episode, and we all know why -- Logan and Veronica. And yeah, I love those two together and I like to see them kissing and being happy (although it was a little tacked on and fast, don't you think? I'd like to see them actually get back together slowly instead of being forced together by tragic circumstances). And there were a few other things I really liked, such as Duncan orchestrating the Aaron Echolls murder; Jackie having a kid; the entire alternate future sequence with Logan and Veronica together, Lilly stealing people's girlfriends, and Wallace being all cute and non-school-spirity; and Veronica being worried about Mac, who seems to be becoming her only close female friend. But the bad, once again, definitely outweighed the good as far as I'm concerned, and I just... yeah. Like I said, I'm still a hater.

Guess I have to take back that comment I left in your entry yesterday, anonymous_sibyl! I knew I'd fall off the wagon. I never have had any willpower.

(And fox1013, I can't wait for your big end-of-season post tomorrow, on the blessed anniversary of H8!)
