Chapter 1
The rain fell against his skin, a cold breeze brushing his long bangs into his face. His clothes were drenched and hung heavily on his body as he shivered. The brunette slowly walked forward, not paying attention to his surroundings, too lost in his thoughts.
“Useless son of a bitch!”
The boy cringed as a glass bottle shattered by his face, a few shards scraping his neck and shoulder. He flinched when she stepped closer, tasting the alcohol on her breath when she leaned in to whisper in his ear. “Why don’t you just die already, huh?” When he merely lowered his eyes, she hissed and slapped him across the cheek. A trail of blood fell from a cut on his lip as he tried to back away without furthering her anger.
“Please…” he whimpered when she grabbed another bottle and started to chug the drink. “It won’t happen again.”
“Ha! Stupid fucking whore, you can’t even buy a few cases of beer without screwing it up!”
“I’m sorry.”
“You’re sorry?” she mocked him. “You’re fucking sorry?!” Her voice rose to a scream as she grabbed the nearest object and chucked it at him. She smirked when he cried out, the heavy figurine striking him in the side and throwing him into the corner of a coffee table.
The boy felt a bruise forming on his hip as curled into a ball on the floor, trying to ease the pain in his side. “Please,” he tried again to appeal to the women, but she only scoffed, taking another long drink.
The woman kicked him hard in the side before kneeling down, grabbing his chin, and forcing him to look at her. She considered his tear stained cheeks before narrowing her eyes in disgust and harshly pushing him back. “Get the hell out of my sight, you piece of shit.”
*crack*
The boy froze, noticing the empty woods he had wandered into for the first time. His eyes darted around, fearfully looking for the source of the sound. He sobbed softly when the bush to his side started to shake and a large form slowly stalked forward, eyes glowing red in the night. He ran, blindly making his way deeper into the forest as the beast followed closely behind him.
“Fuck,” he hissed as a large branch hit his injured side, causing him to stumble and fall onto the wet ground. Another rush of adrenaline flooded his system when he looked back to see the creature approaching him. He was up and darting thru the thick trees, using the soft light of the moon to watch for other obstacles. Minutes passed, his strength draining with his growing panic. He could almost feel its breath on his back as the beast drew alongside him.
Searing pain ripped through his body as his hip finally gave out. A scream filled the air as he pitched forward and tumbled down a small cliff, his body hitting rocks and trees before finally settling on the open ground. Forcing his eyes open, he groaned as he tried to force himself up, but it hurt too much. The rain slowly stopped as his vision began to fade, the pain dulling as his body went numb. A whimper escaped the brunette as the creature-a large wolf- walked toward him. He felt its hot breath against his neck, and then the world went dark.

Lay’s eyes fluttered open as he groaned, his entire body aching as he struggled to sit up. Glancing around, he found himself in a small cave. He hissed in pain when he tried to stand, and decided to lean against the wall instead. The only light came from the entrance bathed in the moon’s glow a few feet away. As his eyes adjusted to the darkness he noticed a large mass laying in the opening, blocking his exit.
Another wave of agony washed over him when he brought his knees to his chest, a brief sob escaping his lungs as he remembered being chased and falling. Tears fell freely when the creature turned to look at him, his eyes glowing a frightening red. The boy whimpered as the wolf stood and walked over to him, his head lowered as he drew in several deep breaths- tasting his fear.
“P-please,” Lay cried, closing his eyes when the beast rubbed against his shoulder. He jerked when he felt something wet touch his cheek, his entire body trembling as the wolf continued to clean his face.
Satisfied, the wolf sat down and studied the boy, his head cocked to the side. When the boy didn’t relax after several minutes of silence, the beast softly whined and nudged Lay’s knee.
“What?” Lay whispered as he opened his eyes to regard the strange wolf. A part of him refused to believe he wasn’t dreaming. There was no logical reason why a wild animal would chase him through the woods until he was knocked out, drag him to a random cave, and then just stare at him like some kind of curiosity. And if it was a dream, he didn’t have to be afraid. Right?
The wolf gently, slowly, bit the hem of Lay’s shirt and gave it a few tugs. Releasing the material, he walked toward the entrance and looked back expectantly. When the boy didn’t move, he shook his head and repeated the process, this time pulling harder on his shirt.
He tried to stand, he really did, but his body refused to obey. He ended up sprawled on the floor, wincing at the sharp sting in his side. “I can’t,” Lay tried to explain to the wolf when he continued to insist the boy get up and follow him. He jumped when a low growl came from the creature pulling on his sleeve, not accepting his excuse. Clenching his jaw, Lay slowly forced himself up, leaning against the wall until his legs stopped shaking.
He managed only a couple of steps before he became light headed and collapsed. A vicious headache overcame him, the lure of sleep making his eyelids heavy. The wolf began to lick his face and neck, trying to convince him to try again. “It hurts.” He sighed as the beast began to gently explore his body, brushing his nose across his arms, nudging his chest and pawing softly at his legs. Whenever the boy hissed in pain, or show discomfort in any way, the wolf would give the spot a soft lick and move on. A harsh cry tore from Lay’s throat as he felt a soft nose pressing against the side where his mother’s figurine had struck him.
Biting his lip, Lay ignored the feeling of his shirt being pushed up and a wet tongue soothing the abused skin. Glancing down, he silently cursed. A nasty bruise had formed over several cuts, the blue and purple colors obscured by a dark red. The wolf carefully cleaned the dried blood before moving back to the entrance and calling for him to get up.
Closing his eyes, he meekly shook his head. “Please, just let me sleep. I can’t- it hurts.” A few tears escaped as another wave of pain washed over him. Lay pulled his legs to his chest when he felt the wolf pawing at his foot, trying again to coax the boy to follow him. “Just leave me alone!” Lay snapped, his voice no more than a harsh whisper as he glared at the beast. A surge of fear mingled with anger as the wolf narrowed his eyes and growled softly, but he didn’t have the strength to care anymore.
It was too much. His mother, the pain, the damn wolf- he just wanted it all to stop. Why couldn’t he be in control for once? It was his life, shouldn’t he have a say in what he did with it? Or didn’t do with it. The thought struck him so forcefully, he actually sat up, ignoring the searing pain, and shoved the startled wolf away from him. Frantically, he looked around until he spotted a jagged rock the size of his hand.
Testing the weight and sharpness, he smiled when he wrapped his fingers at the base. Not letting himself change his mind, he slammed the pointed edge into his wounded side, crying out as a flash of red danced across his vision. A sudden euphoria filled his veins as he dug into his side a second time, a crazed laughter filling the air as the rock tore at his flesh a third time.
Adrenaline flooded through him, for once he was in control. He could put a stop to it; no one would ever be able to force him to obey. Free, he would be free from all the pain, the betrayal, the looks of disgust from his own mother. It would all go away. It wouldn’t hurt anymore. There was no one to stop him, no one to make him stay in this nightmare for another minute.
As his arm descended for a fourth hit, a set of teeth latch on to his wrist and yanked him back. The boy screamed in pain and frustration, striking his attacker hard and pulling his bleeding wrist free. He scrambled for his rock, desperate to free himself from this hell. A deep roar echoed through the chamber as the wolf tackled the boy, pinning him to the floor. He let his claws dig into Lay’s shoulders, baring his teeth as he growled mincingly at the still struggling brunette.
Unable to break free, Lay’s strength left him and he broke down crying. He body shook violently as he sobbed. The wolf released the boy, snuggling into his side and gently licked his tears away. Instinctively, Lay clung to the beast and buried his face in the thick fur. Eventually the warmth and sense of security from the wolf, along with his exhaustion, lulled him into a deep, dreamless, sleep.
