Chapter 2

Lay’s peaceful sleep was broken abruptly when someone began to shake his shoulder violently. Groaning, he cracked one eye and was greeted with a worried look from his friend.

“You sure you’re ok to be back? You’re still really pale Lay.”

He sighed. It had been three days since he woke up in a hospital bed, and his body was still very weak. The doctor had been very reluctant to release him, but his mother had insisted she could care for him just fine at home, and eventually he was released. She had not been pleased, yelling at him the entire ride home. At least she decided not to give him another beating.

“I’m fine, Baek, just tired.”

“You still don’t remember what happened?”

“Not really,” Lay mumbled as he buried his head in his arms and closed his eyes. He remembered his mom was drunk and had chased him out of the house for something stupid and he had ended up in the woods. After that, his memory was hazy. The only thing he could recall was a pair of red eyes staring at him and a strange feeling of comfort filled him whenever he thought about it.

“Alright class, take your seats.” The teacher spoke as he walked into the classroom, giving some of the students warning glares when they didn’t move fast enough. “We have a new student today,” he said, motioning for the student to come in.

Students began to whisper as very tall boy walked in. His short hair was jet black and several piercings adorned his ears. There was a dangerous aura around him, one that made Lay unconsciously sink back in his chair. His eyes were cold as he scanned the room, before smirking and introducing himself. “I’m Wu Fan, pleased to meet you.”

Much to Lay’s dismay, the teacher assigned the new student to the open seat right behind him. He could feel Wu Fan eyes on him as he settled into his seat and the teacher began the lesson. The feeling of being watched didn’t disappear for the entire period, and by the time they were dismissed he was almost shaking. He grabbed his stuff and dashed out of the room, not waiting for Baekhyun to catch up with him.

He had almost made it to the lunchroom when he was he roughly pulled back and shoved against a set of lockers. “Where do you think you’re going?”

Lay’s eyes widened in fear as a hand grabbed his chin and forced him to look at his attacker. “Suho,” he whimpered, “please, just let me go.”

“Now where’s the fun in that?” The older purred as he tightened his grip, and leaned forward to whisper in Lay’s ear. “I don’t recall giving you permission to skip our little appointments. I’m going to have to punish you, aren’t I?”

“No!” The brunette cried as his body began to shake uncontrollably. “Please, i-it wasn’t my fault.”

Suho narrowed his eyes and threw his fist into Lay’s stomach, smirking as the younger collapsed on the floor. “It’s always you fault, you little shit.” He kicked him harshly in the side before crouching down and yanking on the brunette’s hair, forcing Lay to look at him. “And it won’t happen again, will it?”

Lay desperately shook his head as tears stained his cheeks. “N-no.”

“Good, but just to make sure, I’m going to teach you a lesson you won’t soon forget.” He slammed Lay’s head into the floor and gave him another solid kick to the side as he stood up, cracking his knuckles.

“Please,” the younger begged, his eyes darting around for anyone who might help him. He closed his eyes and sobbed when the other dragged him up and slammed his back against the lockers. Lay braced himself for the string of punches he knew was coming.

“So you’re the hotshot around here, huh kid?” A dark voice said in amusement.

Lay turned to look at the speaker over Suho’s shoulder, only to feel another wave of fear wash over him. The set of cold eyes locked with his was almost as frightening as the boy harshly holding him.

“Who the hell do you think you are?” Suho hissed, letting Lay go as he turned to face the new student.

Wu Fan ignored him, his eyes still on Lay as he spoke. “Get out of here.”

The youngest nodded and took a step toward the hallway, only to be pulled back when Suho grabbed his wrist. He twisted his arm painfully before throwing him on the ground. “We’re not done yet,” he growled before turning his attention to Wu Fan. “Piss off.”

The giant walked forward confidently, stopping when his face was mere inches from Suho’s. “That’s quite the bark you’ve got punk, but I doubt you have the bite to back it up.” Without warning he punched the other hard and threw him into the lockers.

Not waiting to see how the fight ended, Lay scrambled to his feet and ran all the way to the lunchroom. Baekhyun gasped slightly as he slumped into the seat next to him and hid his face in his arms.

“Lay, what happened?” When he didn’t answer, Baekhyun shook his head and rubbed his friends back. “It was Suho again, wasn’t it?”

Since Lay had entered high school, Suho had decided he would make the perfect punching bag. Every day he would hunt the younger and beat him up. Sometimes he would be satisfied with a simple slap across the face and snarled insults, but other times he wasn’t happy until Lay was bruised and bleeding so badly he couldn’t walk. And he never took it well when the younger missed school, no matter the reason. The ‘punishments’ he would receive from skipping were the most severe and prevented him from even thinking of avoiding his tormentor.

“Hey, you want to come over tonight?” Baekhyun asked as he pushed his tray of food in front of Lay and motioned for him to help himself.

“Really?” Lay asked, his voice hopeful at the thought of escaping his mother for a night. “Your parents won’t mind?”

“Of course not, they love you. I can give you the notes you missed and help you catch up on your homework. You can even spend the night if you want.”

Lay smiled softly as he helped his friend polish off the lunch. “Thanks Baek.”

After lunch, Lay hurried to his next class and took his seat with a sigh of relief. Suho wasn’t in any of his afternoon classes, so he could relax and not worry about what the other might do to him. He closed his eyes and tried to squeeze in a couple minutes of sleep before the teacher came in.

“Hey, you ok?”

Lay’s eyes snapped open as Wu Fan sat in the seat next to him. “Y-yeah,” he stammered, looking away from the other’s piercing eyes. “Thanks, for earlier.”

Wu Fan waved his hand dismissively, “I was looking for a fight anyways.”

A shiver went down his spin at the other’s words. He really didn’t want to get involved with anyone who enjoyed fighting that much. Hoping the other would decide to bother someone else, he busied himself with reading over the day’s lesson.

“So what’s your name?” Wu Fan asked as he rested his chin on his hand and stared at the younger.

“Lay,” he whispered almost too softly to be heard.

When Lay didn’t look up from his book, Wu Fan sighed and left him alone. Somehow Wu Fan had ended up in every one of his classes, but the older didn’t attempt to start another conversation. As the final bell rang Lay found Baekhyun waiting for him at his locker, and the two left to catch a ride with Baek’s father.
