On Saturday morning I biked to Utica, Indiana. There's something empowering about leaving your urban area and even your state entirely under your own power, especially when six months ago biking a single mile would have been a joke. If there are bike lanes, in my experience urban biking is a snap. Unfortunately Louisville's bike lanes don't really go anywhere. Still, I've only had a few incidents with motorists... nothing dangerous just morons who don't believe I have a right to be on the road and decide to yell at me. The main thing is to just make sure you're visible (reflectors, flashers, etc.) and ride in a fast and predictable manner, staying as far to the right as you can. Even in Louisville drivers can deal with bikers for the most part... there are always horror stories, but I mean, I know at least a dozen people injured while in a car over the years... leaving your house just carries some risk of accident no matter what kind of transit you use. You have to keep that in mind.

But please don't ride on the sidewalk, that harasses pedestrians.

I'd love to bike 125 miles in a day but I really need a better bike to do that!
