So, this weekend I did the Labor Day Hike & Bike. This is basically a big city-sponsored (the Mayor was there) festival where about 2,000-3,000 people show up and bike around a road course. So like, in Louisville's quest to be a bike-friendly city, they've decided to add bike lanes to all major streets and launch an aggressive program to educate drivers and bikers on how to share the road safety. Well of the weekend, really. Apparently the ice cream van guy goes around with his muzak version of a 20 second loop of "The Entertainer" playing 24/7. How on earth does one maintain sanity under such conditions? On Saturday morning I biked to Utica, Indiana. There's something empowering about leaving your urban area and even your state entirely under your own power, especially when six months ago biking a single mile would have been a joke.
