I love HHMI conferences. Love love love love. The people are interesting, the conference is run smoothly, and the accomodations are incredible. We all get our own little bedroom and bathroom right in the HHMI compound, with little bottles of lotion and a soft duvet (no sketchy floral polyester coverlet here!) and a basket of snacks in the common

Alice, that would be really cool if you ended up here too! Of course Alexandria is really about 90 minutes away from Rockville whether by metro or driving, but anyway it would be much closer than New Zealand :)

My sister (harobed) lives in Alexandria right now and has been in the DC area for the last 3 years. She has written about lots of the cool activities they have there; recently, they projected artwork onto the national cathedral. She also posts a lot of pictures on her flickr account. There's also a lot of pictures of her cats on there, sorry.

That said, I think some of the areas in Maryland and Virginia (I prefer Maryland) that are within commuting distance to Washington are fairly nice. I definitely miss the West Coast "attitude" but since you're from out here, probably not so much for you. =)
