Held a brand new baby today. The nurse interpreted my look of horror and whispered "Oh, no no no" as "Yes, I'd LOVE to bring the kid over to show its mom." She'd just had a C-section -- her fourth, I think -- and was very rational when she wasn't being nauseous, and it was a pretty good-looking baby once it got all wiped off, so I wasn't ( Read more... )

Something important I have learned recently: I have to be a surgeon. See, I desperately wanted to LOVE anesthesia. Gases! Injectables! Central lines! People with COPD undergoing quintuple bypass and did we mention they're in renal failure! Shouldn't that be fascinating and fabulous? My first night on call was awesome. Two butt abscesses and a guy with about eighteen million broken bones. There was some other stuff, too, but I can't think of it now. I was already 14 hours into my day when I started ER call... left after 29 straight hours in the hospital. Two of which were sleeping, pathetically, on a hospital transport cot ( Read more... )

I love HHMI conferences.  Love love love love.  The people are interesting, the conference is run smoothly, and the accomodations are incredible.  We all get our own little bedroom and bathroom right in the HHMI compound, with little bottles of lotion and a soft duvet (no sketchy floral polyester coverlet here!) and a basket of snacks in the common ( Read more... )
