It's not ideal, but the best course of action is probably to just periodically restart Firefox. You can get a session-saver plug-in if you don't already have one so that you don't have to worry about losing all your open tabs.

Or maybe switch to Opera? *shrug*

I do periodically restart, I had just left it on for quite a while and had never seen it get that bad before. When I need to save a session I always force-quit, but a plugin certainly would be more elegant. And I rely on too many extensions to switch at this point, though I suspect I would switch to Safari before Opera (rendering is better and faster in my experience.)

I thought I had heard that Safari for Windows had issues or something.

Hm, I didn't run into any, but I used it for an admittedly short time.
