I'm not so much into the idea of sports as popular culture, but as folk culture, they are appreciated. Getting together to play some hockey on a pond during the long shitty winter that happens most places in this country has kept many people from wanting to kill themselves, I'm sure.
Talking about draft picks and trades and suspensions is no different than talking about the latest movies coming out. It's all just entertainment in the end. I'm with you on one thing though, it's boring as fuck to listen to.
Actually going out to a game (Giants, fuck the Canucks), having a few beer and getting into the energy of the crowd... That's always a good time.
The way people talk about sports would be like some one talking about the basics of making of movie, with what all the staff has done before, what warranties are still left on the equipment, and then speculating how good it's going to be in the term of how much money it is going to make. Rather then talking about the plot/story line, cinematography, or even the special effects of a movie.
But I'm just like any guy, I love to search thru old games from the 70's to be amused by the social relevance those games still hold to day. What is being said about our culture tendencies, what is in the minds of the people at the time, where they set their limits, how they saw the world around them. It's the points the games showed, goals of whole team, and the distance man kind has ran, this is whats important in life.
