i feel ya there. im not a "frat party" person. there are smaller parties, the problem is usually you have to go to the bigger parties in order to meet the people that throw the small ones. use facebook to your advantage too. parties are usually advertised there. if not you can always come visit here cause we throw parties in our apartment!!! <3

Wow...I never knew.

I totally agree. Small groups of people make great parties, and small groups of drinking people make terrific nights.

On the whole. frat parties are designed to attract girls for frat guys to try to get drunk enough to sleep with. That may be a gross generalization, but big drunk parties can't ever be like smaller ones because of how drunk people just are.

I'm glad somebody shares my general aversion to large parties in favor of smaller ones. I was beginning to feel like a lameass.

Unless you're looking to get trashed or have some sexual misconduct, most people favor small parties with people they know. They're simply more comfortable. I mean, you're around good friends, and drinking to have fun, whereas when it's a huge party, you're drinking to drink, to do stupid shit you're probably going to regret the next morning.

What you need to do is throw your own party, and if you want to drink, ask someone to bring some alcohol. That, or make friends with older kids and ask them to throw a smaller deal.

On the whole, though, you just need to give the acclimation sometime. You're a likeable person, even if you don't wear polos and button-ups every day. It's a big campus and you will find someone you fit in with.

i'm really not trying to make this a plug for my school.

i think that you will find friends that are like you eventually where you are. i think you will eventually be happy at UVA. it's only the first week. but if, for some reason, you hate where you are even after the first semester, you can always transfer to another school. it's not out of the question. so, just remember you have options and you're not stuck being miserable, though I don't think that you will be forever.
