Have you ever seen the stage production of Les Miz? Compared to the movie, it is like chalk and cheese. I could barely sit through the movie, but I spent most of the two stage productions I saw (Broadway in Chicago and at home here in Perth, Oz) in such an emotional state - close to tears, crying, cheering, laughing etc - by the time it finished I felt totally wrung out like a wet rag. The feeling is very different, despite it being the same story. It just did not work on film. At least, not for me, and obviously not for you. I think maybe the only ones who it worked for were those with celebricrushes on the stars and those who have never seen a stage production in their lives. Many people I know tolerated it because of the original story, but would not watch it again. :/
If it's any consolation, I hated "Life of Pi" too. I would have enjoyed it a lot more if it'd just SAID it was an allegory at the front end so that I wouldn't have gone through an hour of "Where is the tiger-poop?" and "Why doesn't the tiger just eat him?" and so forth.
My car mechanic was disappointed in Les Miz. Then again, he was thinking that since it was a "musical" that "sure it's supposed to have a depressing story but there's at least singing and dancing to cheer it up, right?"
