“Is Daddy gonna…”

die?

The little girl stood by her father’s head, looking down at his sleeping face as he was laid out on the operating table in the infirmary.

“No baby, Daddy’s going to be just fine.”

He has to be.

River pulled her daughter into her lap where she sat in a chair by her husband’s side. She smoothed her hands over the girl’s soft dark hair in a gesture that brought comfort to both of them.

“But he looks so pale.”

Deathly pale.

She looks up at her mother’s face, mentally tracing the worry lines between her eyes that have appeared over the last few days since her father was injured.

“He lost a lot of blood, but we filled him back up, didn’t we?”

Lifeblood.

She points to the healing scab on the inside of her elbow where her brother had drawn pint after pint of blood to pump into her husband until she was woozy and barely conscious.

“He’ll be ok though?”

Please, wake up.

River squeezes her daughter tightly, resting her chin on the top of the child’s head. Her eyes drift to the vitals monitor across the room, watching the rhythmic thump of her husband’s heart

“He’ll come back to us soon.”

Loves us.

She promises and feels the girl’s body relax with the reassurance.

“I don’t want him to…”

Die.
