[ Meiling is in her yard at 340 Brady Lane, still toiling with the preparations for flower planting to finally begin, when she notices the rather...

Well, she's not one to judge anyone as strange, but the weapons do make her pause as she leans against the fence. ] Hi! What can I do for you?

And some are human.

Temporarily.

[ She scratches her head. ] It's complicated.

[A questioning look.]

...?

[ Okay, well, instead of starting with herself, like with Cain, perhaps she'll try a different approach. ] --do you know what a vampire is?

...There were stories, dismissed as imaginary until recently. We've never fought against one, but there are rumors. An undead blood drinker, is it?

Those are the basics, yeah.

See, when people come to Mayfield -- don't ask me how -- this place makes us all human. It takes away everything that makes us unique except our brains and our looks. So, say... a vampire shows up in Mayfield. Bing! They're human, now. They probably don't have to drink blood, or stay out of the sun, or whatever other superstition you'd think goes with the whole being-a-vampire deal.

So... in that case, why treat them differently? If we're on the same level, there's no need to discriminate. [ She hopes. ] -- right?

[...

So basically Myrrh the Manakete would be human here? The dragon girl that she saw with her own two eyes was the closest example that she could think of.]

I see. A vampire would still be conscious of who they are, even if they've been turned human. Are drones like that, too?

I think so! It's strange to suddenly be different, just like if... let's say someone were to just-- [ She snaps her fingers. ] --boom!, turn you into a vampire overnight. [ Meiling speaks from experience. ]

I... don't know about the drones. You can't really have a deep conversation with one.

I'm not interested. [might or might not be missing the point here.]

Maybe a mage can tell better, but they are unnatural. They all behave uniformly and have an empty look in their eyes. They don't look alive, and if you can't talk to them, they may not be conscious too. That's why they remind me of the undead.

[ And Meiling seems to miss the point that Marisa's missing the point. Isn't miss-communication fun? ] --huh?

...right, but that's no reason to treat them like they're not people. They're waking up every day the same as we are, and have their jobs and what they call their lives, just like we do.

. . .

To be a vampire.

They're not aggressive, but they are our captor's pawns. Instead of being ordered to attack us, they conform to drown out our origins. You would be polite towards your enemy?

Oh! I didn't mean anyone would, just that... you know. It could happen.

[ A beat. ] I didn't mean it could happen. I'm sure there aren't any bad vampires like that around who would just do something like that without at least talking it over first and--

[ She sighs. ] Nevermind.

[ Deep breath. ] Being rude to them isn't going to help anyone. That kind of force needs to be redirected and used for better pursuits. Like trying to get out!

[uh-huh.

She sort of followed that, but yes moving on now...]

It's not force. I wouldn't talk to a drone for longer than necessary. [Wouldn't that save force...? So MeiLing might start to get the idea that Marisa wasn't so much as rude than just brusque in her indifference.]

...oh. Well. I guess that works. [ All this just because she didn't want to hang up on the operator. Meiling sighs. ] I had the wrong idea.

You've adjusted well?

You could say that! Having Miss Patchouli and Miss Flandre around helps. [ Smiling fondly. ] It's nice to have a purpose outside of the things this place makes me do. I'm a janitor for the elementary school, otherwise.
