It never happens when I'm expecting it to. It's always insidious, a shock, out of the clear blue nowhere. I think that's because I spend so much time doing everything I can to guard against it, so my instincts usually tell me when I'm not safe enough to let my guard down ( Read more... )

This is an amazing piece of writing. You should consider publishing it.

I share an office with six other women. I recently decided not to participate in any discussions related to being "fat" or eating "bad" food, etc. I've felt so free since then.

I love the description of 'politeness' as being your superpower, and now that you've shared what was beneath the surface of how that uninvited and unwelcome comments made you feel, I think superpower absolutely covers what it must take to hold that back.

What a nasty, dreadful person, and I'm sorry you keep encountering this same treatment and conversation again and again.
