It never happens when I'm expecting it to. It's always insidious, a shock, out of the clear blue nowhere. I think that's because I spend so much time doing everything I can to guard against it, so my instincts usually tell me when I'm not safe enough to let my guard down ( Read more... )

I really like the way you resolve this piece - it ends with forward motion rather than veering to bitterness, and that makes it so much more powerful. And you sound so strong and powerful throughout.

I'm sorry you had such a rough past - nobody should have to go through all that - but you seem to be a remarkably strong woman because of it.

I too am overweight, so I do fully understand the looks and commentary from people who "mean well."

This line was particularly impactful:

"You wanted to make me feel small and huge all at once."

Glad you didn't let her bring you down...it is such a shame that adults act that way. Far worse than children.

I love how empowering this was to read. I'm anorexic, and people are always commenting on my weight. I'm always told how skinny I am, that I look like a corpse, and a whole bunch of other crap. People can't get past the appearance. They don't care about the person inside.

Thank you for writing such an emotionally charged piece.

And this assumes that you don't take care of yourself anyway. And even if you don't, what freaking business is it of theirs anyway?
