offensive content

I know the mods have made a statement about using lj-cuts when posting questionable material, but you may want to consider that many of us use the RSS feed for this community since we aren't regular LJ users...and the lj-cut tag doesn't work for anyone unless they view the entry from LJ. Also, viewing the cut is only an option. I know many users ( Read more... )

I'm sorry, but I'm having a hard time understanding what the implications are for RSS feed users. I don't know what that is, or how it works. Would you mind elaborating? Thanks!

The RSS feeds I use don't put photos up, I don't know about any other services.

It's basically a site that consolidates all of the blosg you read into one page so you can read them alltogether.

If you people are having problems reading the subjects before you click on them, that's your problem. The ones I've seen have put appropriate titles for their subjects, and if you don't like the subject matter. i wouldn't suggest clicking on the site.

The entries all appear in their entirety except if an LJ cut is used, so it is not a matter of just not "clicking on the site," because the content is going to show up on your computer screen if you go to your friends page ( ... )

I was referring to RSS feeds, not LJ friends list. I thought I specified that. :)

Ok, so what would you propose? I'm honestly curious here, because the only solution I can think of (besides letting people be responsible for when and what they view on their screens) is censoring anything that might possibly ever offend anyone?

While it sounds like a plausible idea, lets look at what it would block:

dildo cozies
crocheted genitalia

Ok you're thinking, so?

Anything christmas/hannukah/ramadan (religious) related (etc.).

Anything gay.

Anything with a pentacle.

Anything scary (can't scare the little ones).

Anything anarchist.

Anything political at all.

Anything involving or suggesting sex of anykind.

Anything involving disease or sickness of anykind.

What would we be left with? Yet another list of striped afghans and granny squares. Now there's a place for those, but they already exist, in spades. What's the point of making this another?

I'm just hoping that the so called offensive content isn't a tampon.

Wouldn't have occurred to me that a commonly used item for personal hygeine would be offensive. My deodorant isn't offensive. My bandaids aren't offensive.

I'm of the mindset that I sign onto the internet on any given day, I'm bound to see at least one thing that bothers me, unless I censor my own self and my activities. That's why I stay away from CNN.com (LOL) Can't stand the news!

3) Someone volunteer to spin off a separate community called "adult crochet", for 18's and older, and prohibit sexual content on the main community.

I believe crochet_porn (did I offend anyone? I said porn!) was set up for just this purpose.

But I mean come on. How many crochet communities do I have to belong to just to share in a hobby I enjoy? Isn't this getting ridiculous?

And bravo to the well written suggestions above :) I'm getting really grumpy with all of this stuff lately (not just here, everywhere) of YOU NEED TO CENSOR YOURSELF SO I DON'T GET OFFENDED. We all have to take responsibility for our own actions, not only the "offenders," but the offendees. I don't mind having all pictures behind a cut, since I'm still in the dark ages of dialup, so they take a long time to load. But there are a plethora of RSS feeders out there that work in a plethora of ways, and experimentation is good.

Oy.
