It is sad that fursuits have become just something people get in order to feel popular. Early on in my time in the fandom I always thought costumes added to the fantastical feel of a convention, but that's just gone away.
I find interacting with characters intriguing, although you have to be careful to remember everyone else isn't inside your head, and doesn't have the understanding of your character that you do. Conventions of course are now the worst place to try any sort of real interaction, unfortunately.
I've read a lot about suiting, suiting etiquette, and what to expect when in the character. I have a fursuit on commission, but I *knew* I wanted to suit ever since my first personal experience with fursuiters at a convention. Before that, I saw it as something interesting but not for me. But something clicked when I first encountered them in real life. It's hard to explain, but it drew me in such a way that I almost felt like I was naked without one and I wanted to jump right in and perform with them. I start getting giddy like a child all over again with some of them, and I love it

Everyone starts for their own reasons. With me, I've always seen myself as a clown/actor/entertainer whose favorite medium happens to be big fuzzy animal costumes. I've never had a personal character that I ever considered "me" in fur. They've all been built up from little pieces of my heart, but no single one paints a complete picture of me

I was wondering who in the hell is this? I know all the talking character before the cougar showed up. Oh wait, I know who that is now. :)
As to what is happening the fandom now. What can I say? It is what it is. Good post both of you. All we can do is just do our thing and maybe it will draw some others in.
You have just hit upon EVERY reason I'm tired of this fandom. It's not worth my time to make a new suit, spend the $$$ to drag it to some convention, and have no one give a flying shit about it because a: It's not from a major builder, b:I'm not a pop-u-fur, or most likely c:, because there are several hundred suiters wandering around. LIke you, I did/do this to get attention/feel like I matter/to entertain.
There is a good side, I suppose. Now I don't spend money on cons I don't enjoy, and I have more time to take local gigs, get what I need out of being a character, and get paid for doing it.
