Dairine looked around the gardens appreciatively. They were extravagant, of course, but something of their grandeur reminded her of Roshaun's palace. Which really wasn't what she needed to be thinking about.

She reached behind her and picked up Spot, then turned to Jack. "Shall we?" she said, starting off in a random direction. Hopefully they'd stumble upon a helpful person shortly.

"That force field thing they have set up," she said. "I wonder how they're powering it."

"Could be any of a number of different methods, in this era," Jack mused, strolling alongside her, his eyes still scanning the gardens for anyone useful to approach. "Atmospheric bubbles were pretty common even by my time; they're a useful way to colonise worlds with unbreathable atmospheres - or no atmospheres." He gazed out at the horizon for a moment, his expression unfathomable. "I never expected Earth to be one of those, though. That's not how it's supposed to be."

"Yeah," Dairine said. She was still thinking about the ways you could set up a force field and what sort of effect they'd have on space travel. Sure, she could just bounce from one planet to the next and she could carry her own air with her, but it was still something fun to think about.

"Although things looked pretty rough in that near future time period, too," she continued. "Clearly they got worse."

((OOC: God, I'm sorry, here I am trying to be good and tag more often and I forgot you'd tagged and it was my turn! *smacks forehead*))

"I think that must be when this happened," Jack said soberly, with a gesture out towards the barrier. "When the planet became uninhabitable. Well, shortly after that period, at least, since at that point it was just barely habitable. I don't know how long those people could have survived, though, not without the ability to grow crops. It's like the extinction of the dinosaurs all over again. And it's not supposed to be like that.

"...Which I guess does make it more likely that this whole place - in all its eras - is an artificial creation."

As the two rounded a corner, they came into sight of a young man, lounging on the grass. He was dressed in a loose-fitting and colourful silk-like outfit, his feet bare and a pair of sneakers placed haphazardly at his side. He was basking in the simulated sunlight while he read something from an electronic device held at arm's length while periodically sipping from what appeared to be a wine bottle. He chuckled warmly at something he was seeing or hearing, before taking notice of Jack and Dairine.

Sitting up a touch straighter, he slicked back his mop of colourful black-and-blue streaked hair with one hand and watched their approach with intent but unworried attention.

Well, this looked like a good bet. Someone who was clearly extremely relaxed and equally clearly not a member of hotel staff. Or if he was, he was off duty.

With a brief glance at Dairine, Jack subtly altered their course so that they were heading nearer to the man, on a trajectory that meant they would pass him rather than aiming straight for him, but which made it natural to pause and exchange pleasantries.

"Hi," he said, with a beaming grin. "Lovely day, isn't it? Mind you, I guess the weather's always lovely here!"

"I would think so," the young man replied, his voice marked by an unmistakably British accent, though one which showed signs that Jack could easily recognize of millennia of linguistic evolution. "I mean, that's what it's built for." He pointed upwards at the dome above their heads, dimly visible in the sky. "Wouldn't be much point in goin' to all the trouble of buildin' it just t'make bad weather, eh?"

He took another drink from his wine bottle and then placed his arms loosely around his knees where he sat. "You two from out of town then, yeah?"

"Yeah, just visiting," Jack agreed easily. "Mind if we join you?" he added, collapsing bonelessly onto the grass before giving the man a chance to object - a trick he'd learned a very, very long time ago - and following the guy's gaze upwards. "It's an atmospheric dome, right? How long has it been there?"
