The bad news: my insurance excludes orthognathic surgery.

Here it is all fast and furious:

1. I'm going to need upper jaw surgery to correct my painful crossbite.
2. I've already gotten the braces needed for the first stages of correction thanks to the lovely people who have been giving me money.
3. I need surgery in one year. One year.4. The surgery involves cutting my upper jaw in three places and my ( Read more... )

Ouch Ouch Ouch Ouch. Health Insurance sucks! They charge you so much and cover so little. Good luck to you.

Sometimes, insurance does cover something, but they're hoping you won't notice. They'll make you talk to a lot of people and fill out a lot of forms, but if you keep bugging them, you might find something. Sooner or later, some kind soul who's thinking about quitting his job will tell you the magic form that will get your procedure covered. This would be a good time to be tenacious and persistent. Remind them of how expensive it gets when a person is suddenly unable to eat food. Remind them that a necrotic spot in your gums can lead to sepsis, which is incredibly expensive to treat. Whatever you do, keep at it.

Best of luck!

I'd like to think that would get me somewhere, but the surgeon seemed pretty firm that if it ain't covered by the policy, there is not much hope.

I've complained to HR and asked her to go to bat for me. Fingers crossed, but I'm still expecting that there is little to be done and that I will have to pay for this on my own.

Well, I know you are persistent, and if anyone could beat the system, it would be you. I'll keep you in my thoughts.

Your struggle is a really good example of why we need national health care.

*kicks your insurance company*

I hope there is some way to convince them to cover it.

By the way, have you gotten a referral from a primary care physician? If a doctor recommended jaw surgery to help with something like gastrointestinal problems (from poorly-chewed food), the company might reconsider. Also, check if they'll at least cover portions of the procedure, such as anesthesia.

Medicaid/Medicare! Or Dental insurance? :[

I do not qualify for Medicaid or Medicare. Even when I was a poor struggling artist in the forest I didn't qualify because I don't have kids.

Dental insurance doesn't cover surgery.

I have already explored those options in the past.
