So if a character did not pick up a weapon (as in: lol, meant to post but life ate me), would they still be normal, or can they still grab a weapon?

I'm afraid that those characters that did not pick up a weapon will remain their normal selves! They can still walk around the world and interact and so on, but with their regular clothing and abilities.

So, uh, this lacking of some cunning thing...how would that work when he's already extremely clever? Though, I suppose being able to understand the animals and hearing their chatter could interrupt in the thought processes...

Aaaactually, in this case it does, in fact, limit mental acuity as well; just as, say, if Riku were to be the white mage. Riku is a good hand-to-hand fighter and he would suddenly find himself terrible at it. For the Doctor, to have a job with a mental acuity below his standard one, it would actually lower it! So while he's not stupid or slow by any means, it's likely he'll be a little slower than usual, but still better in comparison to the other jobs. ;D
