Studies show (and I'm not lying) that the brain works best when you give it time to do its own thing. Work for about an hour, then take a ten minute break to do something completely different. Just go stand outside and listen to the birds chirping, reduce sensory input and give it time to process the information. You'd be surprised how many blinding flashes of insight you get while doing monotonous, automatic chores.
That makes a lot of sense. Most of mine come right when I am on the edge of sleep. When I am awake enough to still think but asleep enough that I don't want to get up and do anything about them.
