I am a customer service advisor for HM Revenue and Customs (equivalent to the IRS), so I spend my days helping people fill out their tax returns, advise them how to claim back tax, apply for the benefits my department provides, and dealing with a whole gamut of enquiries. :)
It isn't the greatest job in the world but it's certainly not the worst. There's always something interesting going on and we have more than our fair share of 'difficult' customers, but for every customer we have to call in the police to deal with, there's a little old lady a few pounds better off because we've been able to sort out her taxation and that makes it worthwhile. XD

First thing I would do is to use as much money as it took to ensure my parents were comfortable and secure for the rest of their lives. My aunt is a GP, so she's alright. My gran says there's no such thing as a poor pensioner, so she's alright, but my parents...they're both retired on pretty shitty pensions and just manage to scrape through most of the time. I'd buy them a nice house somewhere - a bungalow, because my mum struggles with stairs - and whatever else they needed to make their lives easier. And I'd pay for them to have a little holiday in York, because I know they'd love to go back. :D
Actually, the first thing I'd do is probably go into work, fill out my own P45 and hand it over to my manager with a smile and a bow. XD XD XD

Good places? I haven't travelled much in England, to be honest, so I'd be hard-pressed to recommend anywhere there. York is quite nice and I've always liked Newcastle upon Tyne, and you're already going to London. In Scotland tho', there are a lot of very nice places. :D Edinburgh and Glasgow are both great - I prefer Glasgow - and there are some very picturesque towns and villages up the east coast. If I were going to choose anywhere in the UK to visit, I think I'd go back to the Isle of Skye, which was just beautiful.
That probably wasn't very helpful...sorry. XD

Whereabouts in the Highlands are you going? That's a pretty broad area. XD
Yeah, trains are horribly expensive here. :(

Uhmm, what is your cat's name, and how did you get him/her? XD
I suck at asking questions.
