I'm not, nor ever have been a very physically affectionate person. It takes alot for me to trust someone physically, and to even hug them. When strangers come up and hug me, it always kind of throws me for a loop, and I don't really know how to react other than returning the gesture with a stiff body and robotic like movements that seem paced out.

The strangers hugging you thing isn't abnormal. It's really quite odd at first, and a response takes so much longer to process than you'd think. Sometimes you can go through the psychobabble and relate it back to some old feeling or childhood experience, but most of the time it's just a little foreign. It takes time, but it will eventually become less awkward.
We all long for affection, even if it's just physical touch. You're too precious to go that long without experiencing it. It'll happen.
