I love that they've left the whole Time War ambiguous, but this rings absolutely true. I love stripped-bare Nine (not like that.. well, not entirely), but the way that he's the Doctor at his most profoundly basic. That makes him sound simple, which he's not - he seems the most complex to me - but this "put one foot in front of the other" aspect that you've captured here certainly is at the core of him when he's "new".

(I am very tired, that may be completely incoherent, but I loved the scene!)

I will try to resist saying that I wouldn't object to Nine stripped-bare, but, ahem, yes, you have a good point.

Nine is raw from the Time War, he's lost a lot of his mercy and his faith in the Universe and it's like he's taking his first steps in remembering why he does what he does and the point of it all.

And I think that makes him more complex than any of the Doctors.

You think you're incoherent, I doubt I've made sense at all in what I've just said. But basically, I agree :)
