Signs of atoms!
One of the steps to making a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is getting the atoms in the appropriate part of the chamber (the science cell) and taking a picture of them to see if they are there, how many, and how cold they are. My rubidiums and potassiums, let me show you them
This here is a photo of atoms confined in a magneto-optical trap (MOT)! The shiny red blob in the middle is made up of rubidium-87 and potassium-40 atoms. The atoms are in a vacuum chamber with laser light bombarding them from 6 sides and a magnetic field keeps them in one place.
