Gnomes, Faux-Teaching, & Lack of Sleep

Jan 19, 2007 09:44

The past 2 days have been mentally - as well as physically - draining.

I was awakened at 3 am on Wed. by anxiety; I really didn't want to go to work and have to deal with Gnome shit! I tried going back to sleep, but ended up having my emergency cigarette & crying. When I got to work The Gnome wasn't anywhere to be seen, & Boss told me that he was ( Read more... )

Gnomes are creepy. I've always disliked those little guys.

I feel for you, and yes, PLEASE stop cleaning his desk! You're way too kind.

I wish I had a good insight to share... but your Mark Twain quote made my day.

It is hard to say. Knowing that you want to teach, maybe if you took this job something else might pass you by which is exactly what you want. If you stay in your job now, you can still look for the teaching job that you really want. If you take the Sylvan job it seems that it will be harder for you to find the time to look for a better teaching job that will keep you happy. And it also depends on how much you despise your current job.

Desk with this bean counter (don't want to sully Gnomes) was the main issue...Isn't this problem solved now?
Stop cleaning up his mess!

Is there some reason you can not get on with the local schools? Down here we have a perpetual teacher SHORTAGE. Are the schools where you live overflowing with teachers?

The lesson plans are all scripted; there's little room for imagination.
Not necessarily true. With Beginning Reading, yes. For writing, maybe. Academic? There are a list of books you have to stick to but otherwise you can teach it any damned way you want.

None of the school districts up here are impressed with Sylvan
So not true. We have good ties with several schools in the area. Most of our kids are from Keene or Monadnock school districts, and we're also good with several schools in Mass, Vermont, and further out in NH. So poo to you too.

I would have to teach stuff I don't like to teach
If you want good hours, yes you have to teach math. But you don't have to - but you also won't get great shifts.

I would have to work with the same guy who beat me out for the Director of Education job.
Perhaps if you could learn not to hold a grudge, you might actually get to like the guy. You would in any other circumstance.

I'm not sure ('cause I didn't think to ask) if I'd have to tutor anyone younger than middle school-aged ( ... )

I am just going by the stuff that Sara told me when I interviewed for the DE position. (She is the one who told me that the area schools aren't happy with Sylvan.) I think that the grudge is only a minor thing by now.
