The train journey from Mallaig to Fort William is regarded as one of the greatest railway journeys in the world. I have done it before, just on the ordinary train, and it really is a great trip. Having rewatched the films not that long ago I remember the bridge! Astounding that there´s so much untamed nature all around!

There is little settlement in the upper highlands - the towns and villages are either coastal or in the valleys of the major lochs like Loch Ness.

So the railway lines were built through uninhabited and difficult terrain to connect them to each other and to the two great cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. This landscape is, really, what makes them such works of engineering - and also has a couple of them in most lists of great scenic rail journeys of Europe, or even of the world.

We went to the Glenfinnan viaduct when I was in Scotland for hobbit nephew 1's wedding - but sadly, the train wasn't running that day. But I have a photo of the same thing, only from the ground!

Yes - the regular Scotrail trains going over it are less photogenic :)

As you can see in the video, there are always people standing down below with cameras when the Jacobite goes over it.

It is a very beautiful area. Scotland is a beautiful country, but the highlands is my favourite part.
