This morning we celebrated our Harvest Thanksgiving at church. Originally one of the regular preachers and I were going to do this between us, but he realised he would be off-island, so I did the whole service. Here are the gifts people brought, which will go to Food Bank;

That's quite a clever find-the-recipe idea! And the cake looks delicious.

I had come across a similar one years ago - but hadn't copied it, so I was really pleased that Lynda gave me this one. And it really is a nice cake.

I thought of it for Harvest almost as soon as Lynda passed it to me - and I was going to suggest that as 'my bit' when we were going to do it together. And it worked out well as it got almost everyone busy looking up bits they had probably not looked at in years!

I love the things you folks do in the community; I wish we had anything like that when I was still an eager church-goer; perhaps I'd still be one.

The Bible cake looks very yummy!

I think the roots of the United Reformed Church, in Presbyterianism, were always as church as community, and we have simply changed the way we do it over the years. So bringing goods for Food Bank is a newer version of bringing fruit, vegetables and bread from the farms to then distribute to those without enough for winter.

The Bible cake was very tasty, although I actually substituted the figs with dates as I had some - and I like them better :)

What a clever (and funny) way to pass on a recipe!

It must have taken the original lady (Mrs. Anne Trigg from Llandysul in Wales according to the bit of paper!), a long time to find all the verses - no Bible Gateway available back then!

There's a thing that I can't remember the name of - compendium isn't right - which is a kind of index to the bible, maybe it's all in there...

Concordance, that's it!

Yes - I expect Mrs Trigg would have had access to one. We have one in the bookshelves at church, but it is about 8"x10" and 4" thick, and so it was a lot quicker to feed the information into Bible Gateway to check that all the references were right!

That's lovely! I've always liked your harvest celebrations and the cake idea from the verses is wonderful.
And the cake looks very good!

Harvest Celebrations are so much part of the church year throughout the island. It always brings childhood memories of going to visit the harvest services at other churches and chapels with my grandparents.

Many of the countryside chapels had their service in the afternoon; now the harvest was in the only job needing doing on a Sunday was milking and that was morning and evening, so afternoon was the best time for chapel. So for a few weeks in autumn we seemed to go to a different one every Sunday afternoon!

I was talking to my friend and saying I really should try the Bible cake to see if the recipe worked - and then it occurred to me it was a perfect thing to do at the Harvest service :)
