I'll soon be skipping for the first time in a playdown to qualify for a local bonspiel. My vice is familiar with our opponents and describes them thusly

Sounds like you need to make them draw. You get something in there well guarded, so they can't raise to out-count you, they can't run something back onto you, they can't -- in short -- do anything that involves hitting anything with more-than-tee weight, and make them draw in.
