Last Minute Panic...

Hey guys! I'm so glad to find this community, because I'm feeling sort of stressed and freaked out, and am looking for some advice. My name's Chantal, I'm 16 and I've only been curling for two months. My team's coach has never had me play skip ever, and suddenly they want me to play skip in the tournament, WHICH IS TUESDAY! How much ice to take depends in part on how swingy the ice is. Watch your opponents' rocks as well as your own so you can get a good idea. In general, on good ice, figure about four feet of curl for a draw, a little more for a guard, less for a hit. So if you want a right-handed curler to draw to the button with an out-turn, you'll hold your broom at the edge of the eight-foot ring, four feet to the left of the button. Yeah?

Thanks for all the tips! I'll definitely keep them all in mind while playing! I really do hope that my team's not first to play, because I'd like to watch a few others and see how everyone else plays and (like you mentioned) what the ice is like.

You've been given good advice already. I'll just throw this in:

You've been put in a tough position. There is a *ton* to think about when skipping, and it's a lot for a new curler to deal with. Follow the advice of the others (pay attention to all rocks, both yours and your opponents') and try not to stress about it too much! Do the best you can and have fun. :-)

Don't know if this will get to you in time to help; the advice others have given is pretty helpful. Rather than give specific tips about reading the ice, I'll just give you the most helpful single piece of advice I was ever given: believe what you see. There's a HUGE amount of variation from one sheet of ice to the next. It's a lot of information to keep in mind, but it gets easier with practice.

Do the best you can and enjoy it!

That's funny, cause I did get this too late, but a coach from another school told me the exact same thing! :-P

The game went okay. We played two, and lost both (2 to 3, and then 0 to 2), but that's alright.
