A Work in Progress: What A Man Must Know

Nov 14, 2008 11:20

I have often thought of advice I can pass to my son, on how to make one's way in the world, and what one needs to know to do well. This has been assembling in my head for some time as a collection of such wisdom, and has reached that point where I can put down a draft. This I think, will ever be a work in progress, as any collection of wisdom ever ( Read more... )

But it is also to protect your possessions, your home, your family, and your ideas.

I'd reorder this list of things to protect and start with family.

Never violate your principles for Gold, or put Man before Money

did you transpose Man & Money here accidentally? or am I misunderstanding something profound about the world?

(btw, we don't kill we stop- "always shoot to stop")

...also, what does a woman need to master?

So far I think I've got down To Play & To Enjoy... I'm working hard & maybe close on To Love and To Destroy :/

Good catch, that was a mistake. Correcting now.

what does a woman need to master?

Man = all humanoid creatures. Gender non-specific.

pretty sure I don't need to drink and don't need to rule... I also don't need to kill per se

Drink = all forms of recreation and pleasure. You do that :)

Rule = managing your own household, but also not being subject to the rule of others. I have always known you to be a free spirit. You do that too.

Kill = skill, but also restraint. You certainly have the skill, and haven't killed anyone yet (that I know of) so demonstrate the restraint.

I'd say you're doing pretty well by these guidelines :)

What about a Woman? Would you give a daughter different advice, or are you just using the first pronoun that came to hand?

I have to do that, it's like a union thing,

I knew someone would.

See previous answer above:

Man = all humanoid creatures. Gender non-specific.

Would you give a daughter different advice

In today's world, it'd be the same advice. If my daughter wanted to be a subservient creature like a housewife instead of an active member of society, I wouldn't have much advice to give.
