I have been reading a lot about the history of Iran and Afghanistan and so much of what fucks these countries up is that they are controlled by religious zealots. Well and it didn't help that Afghanistan was invaded by the Russians on the brink of their arrival into a technological and more progressive society. This incident brings to a head what has been happening in Iran for decades. Most of the country is made of up of intelligent, progressive, middle class people who want nothing more than to see progress in their country, a connection to the west, equality for females, etc. It is amazing to read first person's accounts, mostly from women, of their desire and determination to attend university, to learn and what trials they face to their safety just to educate themselves. Hell even just to read or walk down the street with a male who is not their husband or their brother. They know the world is larger then the one they are beings offered by their current government and want out of the oppression. Who wouldn't? It is so
( ... )
I think one of the most amazing things happening now also is that Iran's religious leaders are, in a careful but clear way, siding with the protesters.
I asked Elissa the same question. Why the obvious rig of the election? Is there desire within to overthrow the government? Or are the clerics and religious leaders siding with the protesters to bring about peace?
I wonder if we will ever see anything like this in our country? I marvel that for most other countries it is par for the course for violence to happen in their streets, for students to be shot in their dorms and for people to be taken out of their homes and made to disappear. I want to say jailed for no reason, but that happens much too often in our country as well.
These situations always make me feel so powerless against any of the agencies that control our society. But it serves as a reminder that the whole world is not asleep and has a fierce desire to fight oppression.
I am just going to try to pray for balance. Instead of worrying about the world.

Despots are despicable to all, even zealots.
