Advice I've heard repeatedly, and taken myself, is not to get a kitten. Get two kittens. That way, they'll have companionship, someone else to play and wear themselves out with, and they'll end up being less destructive because they won't be as bored.

I hand raised two kittens once, brothers, their mother was sick.

Loved them, but they still climbed the curtains at 3am!

Seriously, I've had cats and kittens all my life, grew up with them so I knew what they were like. Kittens are the best thing in the world.

I love it when kitties stay kittens. They all do in their own way.

Oh I know that one! This last time we got two. Our oldest dog had to be put down & the younger one was *LONELY*!!!! & by that I mean he barked at everything & everyone; house looked like a dungeon and the TV was on all the time.

Got a 2 year old & a 6 month old. Dog loved the 2 year old (dog passed away about 2 years ago) but hated the kitty....didn't help that Max, said dog, would wag his tail faster & faster when you talked to him & the kitty, Harry, would think it was his new play toy! The 2 year old cat, Molly, loved Max & would sleep with him & rub under his mouth all the time. Most adorable thing in the world was Max sleeping and Molly sleeping right next to him curled up behind his front legs!

The 2 cats run around the house & chase & play with each other still. We've had them 3 years & I still don't see either one slowing down for a long time. :)

Man, we found a feral kitten back in may? And I've been working on domesticating her. And let me tell you. After just having my old-ass lump of a cat? Everything's kitten proofed. The kitten proofing is kitten proofed. And still Karkat manages to get into everything. Everyone in my damn house is covered in scratches and bite marks because she gets too eager when playing. She's a horrible, horrible trashbaby. But god damn do we love her. Just kind of wish she didn't fixate on me, because it's 5 AM and she's pawin' at my face to be fed. She's sleepin on my books when I'm tryin' to read. She's constantly following me like a baby duck because for some odd reason she latched on to me.

Kittens are cute! Kittens are fun! But fuck if they don't take 200% of your energy like greedy lil vampires.

Yikes, but people are idiots.

It reminds me of where I live several years ago, there was at one point a 'fad' of people 'gifting' little chicks (i.e. baby chickens). In a fucking CITY.

Needless to say, the local shelters were soon PACKED with not-so-cute anymore slightly older chicks with their adult feathers starting to grow in and who probably kept shitting all over so that the idiots who received gifts from idiots just dumped them on the shelters.

Ugh, I hate people sometimes.

(PS: We have had several big dogs -loved them to pieces, but they are a lot of work. :)

Your posts need a Xanax warning ;)

I HATE when parents tell their kid its their responsibility.

NO.

You do not hand the responsibility for a LIFE to a ten year old. YOU are the adult. YOU care for the animal!

I couldn't agree with you more. I've had dogs all my life, and although I helped (had one task to help with, like giving the dog water or walking him every day at a certain time), ultimately it was my parents' responsibility to take care of the dog.

Same thing when we had fostered a cat for a short time (earlier on this year); my (then five, now six) year old helped take care of the cat, but ultimately it was up to my fiance and I to care for the cat. Even though we love animals, right now is not a good time for us to care for another pet; even a foster.

Yay responsible people! I hope you can get a pet soon, because I'm sure your little one loved it.

I wonder if these folks honestly believe that a small child can handle it. I mean really!

I know, right? Responsibility FTW ;) Us too! We're allowed one cat in our townhouse, so when life settles down (our wedding is less than 30 days away + both my fiancé & work full time, etc.), we'll look into the option again. My son adored the cat, he kept calling Thor (what my son named him) his "baby brother". They did rile each other up, though.

And I don't think most people get it- it takes time, energy and money to take care of a pet; they're not toys. Most people can't seem to grasp anything past that thought. :(
