Words can't even describe this

My supervisor was dealing with a customer at the till today. A lady pulled me to one side. She had a glass fragrance diffuser in her hand, one of the ones that we take out of the packaging and open up so that customers can smell it. It was almost empty and she asked me if she could have it, since it was empty and we wouldn't have use for it any ( Read more... )

Yikes. :/ Honestly, I don't think she was a stupid customer who thought that was okay, I think she was a scammer. Although unless she sells it, I can't imagine what value she'd get out of that. Maybe she's also a compulsive hoarder?

Maybe, I just don't know. The whole situation was kind of bizarre, especially the "I'm ill, give me free stuff!!!" I mean I've got two chronic pain disorders (fibromyalgia and degenerative disc disease) and I don't go around expecting free stuff, and hearing a person saying this kind of stuff really grinds me gears!

Not to be cold, but I seriously question whether she even had arthritis. Maybe she did, but it would not surprise me if she was trying to elicit sympathy to she'd more easily get away with it. Although like I said, why you would scam just to get an empty container... was it fancy? Maybe she wants to sell it?

It was a rather fancy bottle, yeah. She said she liked how it looked and that the oil had dried up so we didn't have a use for it. Hah, dried up... more like poured out.

Wow, till this day, the customer attitude of those in develop countries always amazes me.
I'm from Asia, so this kind attitude, the shitty customer attitude is unheard of. If there is one, she/he will be stared and people/store employee will scold them or guilt them somehow.

Definitely a customer suck. I'm surprised, though, that in all your years of retail you haven't met a scammer like this before. And yes, it IS a scam. Two in one, actually. One, customer damages a product and asks you to give it to them cheap/free because it's busted. Two, customer cries about their disability/hardship/etc. for sympathy to make you more willing to give them something free.

Well I have, but this wasn't just a typical scam, it was weird. I still can't believe she thought it was acceptable to just pour a bottle of oil on to a floor. What about if there was elderly lady close by and she slipped?

People who play scams are sociopaths. Common notions of what is or is not "acceptable" do not faze them.

Definitely a scammer. Osteo is one of the most common types of arthritis (I suffer from osteo in almost every joint, plus fibromyalgia, and a crapton more. I sure as hell don't expect freebies just because I'm in pain.) - she was definitely just trying to build up sympathy to make you give her what she wanted. I wondered, before I got to that part of the post, if she had emptied the bottle herself. I don't understand at all what she gets out of having just the bottle, though.

I nearly ended up saying that to her. I know a lot of people with osteo. But I thought I'd better hold my tongue. Also, at that point I hadn't realised she'd poured the oil on to the floor, otherwise I'd have been angry.

Ya probably best you did hold your tongue or she's probably threaten to sue you for discrimination!!! But like someone else said, people who behave like this are sociopaths!
