Hi Bud,
I usually don't read anything but canon, but I'm giving this one a shot, because, as I recall, your stories are usually gritty and down-to-earth, like the men themselves, which I like...and though my own writing tends to be, let's say, not always cheerful, happy endings done the right way are a pleasure to read.

This is a great beginning, looking forward to more.

thanks

Well, I appreciate your comment. Jack took on an upper middle class veneer over the years, bowing to [I'm sure] Lureen's efforts and the barbs from LD. But Ennis never did, and I think Jack's wore off to a great degree during those times together, but reared it's ugly crust the very last time. More is on the way! the story is complete, though I do re-read and sometimes tweak each chapter... a word here, a period there... before posting.

I have always enjoyed your writings, too, filling in those missing times alluded to in OS, and now your series on Ennis' life afterwards. He seems more comfortable with this life, though I can't help but think sometimes it's because he doesn't have to explain Jack any more, or quit a job to spend time with him, and concentrate on his daughters and grandchildren. His life, his choices.

Thanks again.

Bud

This is an excellent first chapter, and you have me hooked - I want to read more!

I like your imagery very much, especially this line:
"...watching Jack in the rear view mirror...as he fled the scene that was littered with the naked truths laid bare between them."

Sometimes it is those small things that make us take a look at life like this newspaper fate has a way of working its magic. But, sometimes we miss this opportunity and life passes us by. Joe

This must be the writing you mentioned you'd been working on. It's very interesting so I'll be looking forward to chapter 2 to see where it goes. :)
