I used to call myself Wiccan but was attacked within the Wiccan community because my beliefs did not match up with what one might call Wiccan. I now just call myself Wiccan. The problem with most religions is they are being treated as some sort of club and you have to follow a certain set of rules to be allowed in. Anything today that might be considered Paganism might also be known as a nature religion. My dad said to me "those who respect the earth have it right and those who are more focused on some deity not so much". I have to agree with him on that one. I may mention the goddess and god but do I think of them as a deity? Not really, more of just a part of everything else. I don't do spells or even have an altar. However I respect the earth and all the living things that exist right along with her. I think that Pagan's need to focus more on what is good about the earth and respect it rather than whether or not you are doing a spell right....
I'm actually writing a book on how to establish deep relationships with pagan deities. I find it disappointing to see beginner's books and workshops that focus on spells and rituals without any information about creating a relationship with deities or practicing religion. Spells and rituals aren't religion on their own. I'm also really disappointed in the excessive eclecticism of the pagan community. It looks like a "jack of all trades, master of none" sort of thing. And then there are the people are are just plain shallow. I really feel for you and all the other people I run into that are wanting something deep but not finding it. The Spiral Dance idea of creating religion is all well and good for talented anarchists, but there is plenty of suitable pagan religion out there with tradition, roots, history, structure and stability
