Regarding the car....have you pointed out to them that you won't be able to find a job without a car? That they're leaving you in a catch 22? Perhaps try making a compromise....Give me the car for this semester, and if i don't find a job, i have to give it back? And then FIND a job QUICKLY.
I agree with steph, you simply need a car, no way around it. They need to live in reality, Orange isn't a small town where you are assured of being able to walk to work (though it's better than a lot of other places in that regard). You just need to be firm on this one. It's not like they'll disown you.
And regarding pets dying while in a friend's care....yeah that's not fun. Remember your poor birds during the breakup? Ouch.
Yeah, I've told them that I need it to get a job. I actually had the same idea as you, Steph, only it was something like a month rather than the whole semester. I can do it...after all, I found two jobs within a month over the summer. I suppose it will be a little more difficult since I'm not fully available, but I'm sure it will happen.
And Spoon, it's a little difficult because my parents don't really understand the concept of needing a car in college. They seem to think that everything is easily accessable around a University. I have my brother to thank for that, as he managed without a car all through his stay at Berkeley, (which is an easily accessable college town), and somehow got around for a while in Seattle without one as well, (but he used buses, and people on buses aren't nearly as insane and scary in Seattle
