I've been pondering something the past few days (though the seeds have been germinating for several months). So how do I put this without sounding whiny...?
I am also a known Lurker... , But I recently commented on Leafy-girls new fic on her LJ for the first time, because I wanted to let her know that I am still reading, and happy that she decided to come back to fandom... that is the only time besides this that I have ever commented

I think the reason Naruto fandom got so huge was because the series had so much potential that the creator wasn't tapping into, so many holes and what-ifs we in fandom could fill in. But after so many years the canon has gotten weaker and weaker and the fandom is the only thing holding things up. We're just not inspired by what we have to work with anymore. Which is why my last two fics have been semi-AU.
A vicious cycle...ninjaanneOctober 12 2011, 03:32:11 UTC
Hello! I'm yet another troll lurker speaking out. Sorry if I'm resurrecting the thread (then again, don't worry, I'm a renowned thread killer) but your post struck a chord with me. I really don't think you have anything to do with the issue of declining responses.
I've been reading fanfics for about 11 years now (that probably makes me some sort of enlightened sage, I'm sure) and I've seen this happen with other fandoms. It's what I like to call the cartoonnetwork-highschool-marysue-copycat-syndrome. Yes, that's a word, look it up. ;P
There is a pattern with fandoms:
1) Series becomes popular in Japan. The unofficial channels of fansubs/scanlations inspire fans to write stories in an untapped venue. Less authors saturate the fandom with more likelihood of original stories. The drawback is that there are less fanfics to read.
2) Series is officially translated and whored out (to put it bluntly) to the masses, i.e. Cartoon Network, American Shounen Jump etc... The target audience does not want to be bothered with trivial

I think all of this is spot on. I always liked the kakasaku corner of fandom best because I felt that was where the biggest pool of genuine writing talent lay. And I think that is because we tend to be a little older/experienced/mature over here. But now we're even older than we were when we started, and in addition to real life ebbing away our time, the canon isn't strong enough to hold the interest and devotion of 25+ year olds anymore.

Thanks for the support :)
And if you feel the inspiration to write something then do it! That's how I got started, and I ended up tapping into something I didn't even know I had. You might surprise yourself.
Naruto in decline..

I think one of the main issues is that the Naruto fandom is definitely in decline. Tons and tons of fictions in the Naruto verse have just been loosing momentum, as the original fans of Naruto are getting older. (I mean come on, the first Naruto came out like 7-8 years ago!) Apart from Cynchick's fanfiction, I honestly haven't had an update on any Naruto related fiction in over a year.
And the last horse crosses the finish line....serenitytouchedOctober 15 2011, 22:21:11 UTC
(Feels like that last horse). I just finally got myself into Naruto over the summer partly thinking I could never care for it in the little snippets I'd run into which where dubbed on TV (which..voices were turn off). But, I decided to give Naruto a shot via subs thinking I'd hate it, but quite the opposite happened. Watched it all throughout the summer like it was crack until I caught up to the latest...ugh...fillers that I think are the worst I've ever seen so far. I've been religiously watching until now feeling the need to brace myself. So yeah, I'm really late to the game. -_
