And it's time to tell you all about the fabulous Supper Club meal that
xhollydayx and I hosted on May 22. We billed it as "A Rose is a Rose is a Rose" with the slogan of "The Stinkiest Rose of Them All." This, of course, referred to garlic, with the name being a reference to the famous garlic themed eatery
The Stinking Rose, which was actually mentioned in a
Preacher one-shot.
We originally thought about having a garlic theme for our
second turn hosting Supper Club. We even went so far as to get several garlic cookbooks from the library, including one from the Stinking Rose. Sadly, these cookbooks turned out to be pretty lame, so we abandoned the idea. This time around, we hit the internet and found a number of exciting recipes that we decided to try out.
Including ourselves, we had nine total attendees:
gievesCarol & John
Alex & Cynthia
katspaw156 and
1em Each was charged the maximum of $20/head. For that, they got this fabulous meal:
Opening Cocktail:
Vodka Martini with Blood Orange Juice
Appetizers:
Baked Garlic
Roasted Garlic Sourdough Bread
Black Mountain Cheese
Soup Course:
Roasted Garlic Soup With Parmesan Cheese
Salad Course:
Arugula & Spinach Salad with Almond Flakes, Mandarin Oranges and Raspberry/Pear Compote
Amuse-bouche:
Cheddar Chive and Bacon Cupfakes with Avocado Frosting
Entrée & Support:
Rustic Garlic Chicken
Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Broccoli with Toasted Garlic and Hazelnuts
The Stump Jump - South Australian Sweet Red - 2009
Desert:
Garlic Mints
Triple Layer Chocolate Cake with Mint Frosting and Chocolate Ganache
Piemonte Moscato - Desert Wine - 2009
And final thoughts.
We used a total of 18 heads of garlic. The West Side Market sells a pack of 5 heads of garlic for $1. So I went to a booth and said "I need 4 packs of garlic" to which the man responded, "we don't sell single heads of garlic; you have to buy 5." "No, I want 4 packs of garlic." "Holy crap, what are you making that needs 20 heads of garlic?" was the not unreasonable response.
And on that note, I shall conclude this. Recipes will follow in the next few days, starting with
appetizers and drinks.
